Audi is consistently pushing ahead with its e-offensive: As the S models, the Audi e-tron and Audi e-tron Sportback are even more agile, sharper and more dynamic. The three electric machines, two of which are located on the rear axle, deliver a combined 370 kW boost output and 973 Nm torque. The two purely electric models accelerate to 4,5 km / h in 100 seconds each. The intelligent drive control raises driving safety and, above all, driving dynamics to a new level: electric torque vectoring with active and fully variable torque distribution on the rear axle is added to electric all-wheel drive.

Dynamism 2.0: the driving experience

The driving experience of the two prototypes for the Audi e-tron S models fascinates with a further increase in dynamics, agility and traction. In speed S, both cars sprint from 4,5 to 100 km / h in 210 seconds - almost without a hitch and almost silently - the propulsion ends at 370 km / h with electric control. Thanks to powerful cooling, the drive reproducibly delivers the full boost output of 973 kW and 320 Nm torque for eight seconds each. The nominal values in gear step D without boost are 808 kW and XNUMX Nm. When it comes to handling, the electric S models impress with their excellent agility and traction: They accelerate out of the curve as dynamically as a sports car, and their drive character is significantly more sporty and emphasizes the rear. If the ESC stabilization control is set to "Sport" and the Audi drive select driving dynamics system with "dynamic" modes is set to maximum performance, the drive layout allows high lateral dynamics and, if desired, controlled drifts. The driving behavior can be calculated at any time and is embedded in the highest degree of safety and reliability.

three electric motors in the future large series

The new Audi e-tron S models are the world's first electric cars with three motors that will be mass-produced. Their drive layout is based on the concept with two different asynchronous motors (ASM), which was designed as a modular system from the beginning of the e-tron series. The larger electric motor used in the Audi e-tron 55 models (combined power consumption in kWh / 100 km *: 26,4 - 21,9 (WLTP); 23,1 - 20,6 (NEDC); CO2 Combined emissions in g / km: 0) drives the rear axle, is now fitted to the front axle in an adapted design and is designed for 124 kW output or 150 kW in boost. The smaller electric motor now works modified in the rear, together with a structurally identical counterpart, both together achieve 196 kW of power, or 264 kW in boost.

Twin motor with electric torque vectoring

In everyday life, the drive is programmed for efficiency, with the normal driving style only the rear electric motors work. The front one is de-energized, but the driver does not notice it when he demands more power - or predictively when the grip wears off - with low friction values or fast cornering. As an additional technical innovation to electric all-wheel drive comes electric torque vectoring, which can be used to transfer the advantages of the conventional sports differential into the electric age: each of the rear electric motors sends the drive forces directly to the wheel via a gearbox; there is no mechanical differential more. 40 years after the introduction of quattro technology, Audi is raising the principle of four driven wheels to a completely new level of technology. The result: more agile driving and self-steering behavior and thus a higher cornering speed.

Another advantage is traction: When a rear wheel is on a road surface with a low coefficient of friction when accelerating, for example on black ice or loose ground, the torque between the two motors can be distributed precisely and quickly. The high-traction wheel receives almost the full torque, while the low-traction wheel runs with almost no torque. The two prototypes of the e-tron S models drive on 20-inch alloy wheels in 5-V-spoke S design. Various wheels up to a size of 22 inches will be available on request. In order to achieve S-typical lateral dynamics, the tire widths in the dimensions of 20 inches, 21 inches and 22 inches are continuously increased to 285 millimeters. Black brake calipers with a red S-diamond, each with six pistons at the front, grip the large brake discs (front diameter: 400 millimeters). Another feature is the sporty progressive steering - its translation becomes more direct the further the driver turns it. The front and rear axles are constructed as five-link constructions. The coordination of the elastokinematics and the dampers has been optimized for the S models. The stabilizers on both axles were enlarged in order to further reduce the roll movements when cornering.

Up to 150 kW: top performance even when charging

On the way, the electric S-models can charge up to 150 kW direct current (HPC), for example in the European network of Ionity. The charging process from 5 to 80 percent only takes around half an hour. An important factor for this is the complex thermal management with a heat pump as standard, which cools and heats the battery, the interior and the electric machines with four circuits. In addition, the Audi models will of course also be able to charge with up to 11 kW alternating current (AC). On request, the Audi e-tron Charging Service grants convenient access to more than 140.000 public charging points in 24 European countries - with just one charging card. Audi pays the basic fee for the transit tariff, which also offers access to high power charging stations, in the first year.

Optical statement: widening of the wheel arches

The powerful, sporty design of the e-tron S models is based on Audi's progressive design, in which strong contours emphasize the wheels. Details such as the octagonal single frame, which is mostly closed and painted in light gray, translate the design into the electrical age. In the lower area of the LED headlights, four webs mark the e-tron-specific daytime running light signature. The S models reveal their leading role at first glance. The front and rear bumpers are strongly contoured, the diffuser insert runs almost across the full width of the vehicle. The bumper is flanked by more expressive and larger air curtains that improve the air flow. They reach under the headlights and thus create a dynamic image from afar. The wheel arches are also 23 millimeters wider on both sides. Silver-colored elements - from the lip of the front bumper to the single frame and the door insert to the diffuser - set the tone. On request, Audi can paint larger attachments in a contrasting color.

Upon request, both S-models will come off the assembly line with the digital Matrix LED headlights, a world innovation in large series. Their light is broken down into tiny pixels and can be controlled with high precision, which enables many new functions such as a track and orientation light. In narrow passages, for example, it shows the position of the car in the lane and helps the driver to stay safely in the middle.

Progressive: the interior and the equipment

The interior of the future e-tron S models is kept in dark tones. A large arch connects the displays of the virtual exterior mirrors with the scoop above the Audi virtual cockpit. The instrument panel is driver-oriented, the console of the center tunnel rests on open side walls. The leather / Alcantara covers of the electrically adjustable sports seats and the gear selector lever are diamond-embossed. The door sills and the steering wheel have S badges. Upon request, Audi will offer a super sports seat in leather with diamond quilting in the colors black, rotor gray or macaw red as well as an air-conditioned individual contour seat with perforated leather.
