Bentley Mulliner is celebrating the 1000th custom built product completed since this very special design team was founded in 2014. The team was founded back then in response to the increasing demand for custom-made and personalized vehicles. The 1000th custom-made product was developed for a European customer who ordered two very special interior design features to personalize his Bentley. His first wish was the veneer in “Olive Ash” as in the Bentley Mulsanne, combined with the interior design of the Bentayga. His second wish: a color-contrasting double seam in the upper area of the seats and door panels, which gives the interior more contrast.
1000 custom-made products
The first project was carried out seven years earlier - as a limited edition of 15 vehicles aimed at maximum comfort: the Flying Spur Serenity model. Seats and headrests have been redesigned, and as part of a comprehensive design update, the interior has been provided with covers in a unique diamond pattern. The strikingly structured leather material also inspired the diamond pattern in the current Continental GT Mulliner.
To celebrate this project milestone, the Mulliner design team is showing some of their favorite models from the past seven years. Their work flowed into all Bentley models that were developed during this period - from the jet-inspired Continental to the Mulsanne with its celebrated 6,75 liter V8 engine to the Bentayga with its very individual interior trim with different designs on the driver. and passenger side.
The 1000 custom-made products implemented since 2014 range from tailor-made door sills to projects in which the body has been completely redesigned, for example the Bentley Mulliner Bacalar. The models were commissioned by both regional and international customers, some as limited series and even in racing car style.
The team is made up of specialists who are also part of Bentley's design department: designers and digital artists who offer customers the perfect mix of flawless design and the ability to assess the concept using photo-realistic render graphics before ordering. This team is solely responsible for every Mulliner product over the past seven years - this has enabled the DNA of Bentley design to be fully integrated into the Mulliner models and, at the same time, to expand the scope for customer requirements. The possibilities of the modern Mulliner customer are now only limited by two aspects: their imagination and the applicable laws.
The Mulliner design is an integral part of Bentley Mulliner's portfolio strategy. The team works across all three areas of the Bentley department “Custom-made products and customizations”. The team guided the twelve customers of the Bentley Mulliner Bacalar through all design decisions during the pandemic with the help of Zoom conferences, supported the twelve customers of the Bentley Blower series in setting all specifications, and developed the coupé and convertible versions of the Continental GT Mulliner and published the Mulliner Personal Commissioning Guide, which every Bentley customer can use to get an overview of the possible options and individual design options. Through its active participation in all areas of the Mulliner department - Classic, Coachbuilt and Collections - the team is the driving force behind the revolutionary Mulliner design.
The low production volume of the Mulliner finishing company gives the design team additional freedom. It works closely with all other Bentley design staff to develop new ideas and concepts that could not be realized in series production. This becomes clear, among other things, in the various stone veneers, which can only be processed in small quantities, as wafer-thin stone slabs of less than 1 mm thickness have to be formed and designed during the manufacturing process in an extraordinarily complex and difficult process.
The director of Mulliner and Motorsport, Paul Williams:
“Since 2014, our Mulliner design team has been handling an average of three customer orders per week. This shows the increasing popularity of bespoke Bentleys. The team, led by Head of Design Phill Dean, has already worked on numerous projects, from the painting of a Continental GT3 to the specifications and details of the twelve vehicles from the Bentley Blower series. What all these projects had in common was that they were commissioned by individual customers - apart from that, each work is absolutely unique. With the help of the Mulliner visualizer he developed, the team can now also show our customers the possibilities that can be implemented with a Bentley from series production. Customers can specify the color and interior trim of the desired vehicle and immediately receive a photo-realistic representation of their configured Bentley. In this way, everyone is now able to create new creations together with the Mulliner design team. "
A stunning array of accomplishments
The customizations commissioned by customers include special veneers, some of them with custom-made inlays, and striking eye-catchers such as special color combinations or leather covers in bright colors. Many customer requests include individually designed quilting seams and embroidery, as well as individualized door sills and welcome lights. The different materials selected include tweed fabrics, the use of stone instead of wood for veneer, and even the design incorporation of small artifacts from Bentley's history.
Some orders were implemented as limited series, others only involved a single vehicle for a happy customer. The color scheme of a series limited to seven copies was inspired by the aerobatic team of the Breitling Jet Team and designed in the colors black, silver and yellow. Regional editions are also produced for individual dealers or customers, as well as models that underline Bentley's success - for example the models of the "Continental GT Pikes Peak" edition, which was launched in 2019 to celebrate the mountain record achieved at the Pikes Peak races were created.
But the skills of the Mulliner design team go far beyond building automobiles - they range from developing additional functions to creating scale model cars to making sculptures with special design motifs. The team was instrumental in creating the stylish optional picnic set for the Bentayga. This set includes a refrigerator, custom-made fine cutlery, crockery and crystal glasses as well as a storage compartment for food that does not require refrigeration. Parts of the picnic box can be removed and used as seating so that you don't have to forego comfort in the great outdoors.
Customers of the continuation series Blower and the Bentley Mulliner Bacalar also received individualized “Speedforms” of their vehicles, created by Mulliner, each containing the individual specifications.
Since Bentley Mulliner now manufactures vehicles across all three of its portfolios and the "Personal Commissioning Guide" is constantly being expanded to offer customers even more options for creating bespoke Bentleys, the Mulliner design team will certainly be even more diligent in the coming months and years have to work on new creations.
