BMW E31 (8 Series) with S38B36 six-cylinder from the M5!

Hard to believe but this beautiful BMW 8 Series of the E31 model generation has no V12 under the hood. And that is not because it is an 830i (M60B30) or 840i (M60B40, M62B44) with 8 cylinders, but simply because the M70B50 kicked out Has. Instead, the owner relies on the S38B36 six-cylinder from the first generation of the BMW E34 M5, which delivers 315 HP and 360 Nm of torque ex works. Compared to the heavy V12, this is of course a huge difference on the front axle. After all, the V12 weighs a good 250 kg, which is quite a few kilograms compared to the approx. 232 kg lighter S38B36 six-cylinder. In addition to the sluggish and heavy automatic, there was the manual Getrag six-speed transmission and this brings the increased power to approx. 335 hp (Carbon suction etc.) befitting the rear wheels and also saves a few kilograms.

only 1590 kilograms curb weight

So it's no wonder that the owner calls the E31-8 with a six-cylinder “CSL”, which is clearly visible to everyone at the rear. In figures, that means 1590 kg, which means a saving of almost 2 kg in relation to the series with almost 400 tons. Even compared to the rare 850csi, this is a weight saving of almost 350 kg. But it doesn't just come from Motor- and the gear swap. The ultra-light Enkei RS05RRs aluminum rims on Hankook ventus RS4 tires (265 / 35R18), for example, also play a large part in the manageable curb weight, and the 8 series has also lost a lot of weight in the interior. The most striking feature here are the light Recaro bucket seats with a red cover, which instead of the electrically adjustable leather armchairs enable the driver and front passenger to be held securely. There was also a 3-spoke sports steering wheel without an airbag and there was also a new additional instrument in the center console.

And a lot has happened even on the body. The 8 Series received a new front apron in the style of the E31 M8 prototype with S70-V12, a hood with air intakes and Fast encryption and apparently you have it too Xenon light donated. There was also a subtle lowering and at the rear there is a 4-pipe sports exhaust system with blue-burned tailpipes. The vehicle was completely painted in pearl white by Alpineweiß II, which in our opinion is the perfect color combination for the elegant cruiser. The coupe is impressively rounded off with many small details such as the M3 exterior mirrors, the black contrasting roof and the aforementioned CSL lettering on the rear. Ps. Incidentally, the E836, known as the "BMW 31 CSL", is not only standing around in a highly polished manner, but is now and then even beaten around the racetrack. If we receive timely more detailed technical information about the six-cylinder conversion in the E31-8, there is of course an update for this report. Both weights are incorrect. The V12 weighs 220 and the M5 engine weighs just as much. The V12 has 450 NM and the weight distribution of the v12 8er is exactly 50/50, so it couldn't be better. There is also the 8 Series with a much better 6 speed manual transmission. So nothing is better with this car than with the original.

  2. Is there anyway to source the hood and front bumper/clip? Where would I purchase or are they custom?
