Luxury supercar maker McLaren Automotive will shortly begin production of the windshield version of its Elva roadster. Designed for customers who prefer a physical pane to the air barrier of the Active Air Management System (AAMS), as well as to meet local legal requirements in some states of the USA, the windshield variant - which will be one of the rarest McLarenes - is being used for the first time today fully revealed with pictures of the prototype.
Windshield version
“The Elva is super light and extremely powerful and offers the ultimate connection between the driver, the road and the elements. It was developed to celebrate the sheer joy of driving and is one of the most distinctive - and exclusive - cars we have ever built. Whether you opt for the model without a roof and without a window, which forms an invisible air barrier with its sophisticated AAMS technology, or the version with a windshield, which offers an additional layer of shielding - this is a roadster that its owners come with rewards the most exhilarating open-air driving experience only a McLaren can offer. ”Mike Flewitt, Chief Executive Officer, McLaren Automotive.
Although it had its own development program to optimize aerodynamics and dynamic performance, the Elva with Windshield shares the entire ethos and performance of the original vehicle: it has no roof, side windows or rear window, which combined with a dry weight of less than 1300 kg * and a centrally installed, 815 hp, double-charged 4,0-liter V8 engine ensures ultimate driving pleasure.
McLaren's lightest road car to date
The windshieldless Elva is the lightest road car from McLaren Automotive to date, and the target for the version with windshield is only 20 kg * heavier, even when including the electronically synchronized windscreen wipers with rain sensor, the washer nozzles and the sun visors and of course the heated glass windshield within a carbon fiber surround . The Active Air Management System (AAMS) is no longer necessary as it does not play a role in the windshield vehicle.
The acceleration of both versions is comparable to that of a McLaren Senna. The model without a windshield reaches 100 km / h from a standstill in 2,8 seconds * and covers the distance 0-200 km / h in 6,8 seconds *. The dynamic performance and the vehicle rigidity also remain unchanged compared to the diskless car, as does the fascinating driving experience. The built-in windshield offers more protection from the elements, but in no way reduces driving pleasure.
Tribute to Bruce McLaren's racing car
The Elva fuses McLaren's legacy with the company's present and future with a name and style reminiscent of McLaren-Elva racing cars of the 1960s. These were among the first sports cars designed and driven by Bruce McLaren and the company he founded, and today's Elva was created to evoke the spirit of driving pleasure that these cars symbolized.
Created as a tribute to Bruce McLaren's legendary racing car, historic paintwork such as the prototype pictured in Satin Casa Blue caught the imagination of Elva owners. McLaren Special Operations (MSO) demand for bespoke, custom-built vehicles has spawned a number of dramatic and unique cars that stand out among even the rarest McLarens - no more than 149 examples of the Elva are specified and built to order. The first examples of the Windshield Elva will be shipped to customers later this year, following personalization by McLaren Special Operations.
