illegal modifications can easily double the speed of an electrically powered bicycle (e-bike), but this can be risky. If you are looking for such modifications, you will quickly find various conversion kits on the Internet. It is possible with minimal effort to modify an electric bike using the kits. Instead of the regular top speed of 25 kilometers per hour, you can easily drive at twice the speed. However, this is prohibited by law. In principle, the 250-watt motors used in standard e-bikes are capable of running faster, but are limited to 25 km/h. Tuning kits make it possible to circumvent the limitation, for example by halving the value displayed on the speedometer, which theoretically allows the bike to support up to 50 km/h. However, e-bikes are not designed for such speeds.
e-bike tuning
At higher speeds, additional forces are exerted on the frame and the brakes of the bike Bicycle. In addition, other road users are not prepared for such speeds. There are e-bikes, so-called S-pedelecs, which have a more powerful drive and can reach speeds of up to 45 km/h, but these require insurance and a license plate, similar to mopeds or scooters. Furthermore, wearing a helmet when riding on the road is obligatory, but for us this is part of every two-wheeler anyway. For illegal Tuning threaten penalties and bans. This is a violation of the insurance obligation and the modified bike no longer has an operating permit. The driver must also be able to show a driver's license - without this it would be additional Driving without a license. This can lead to high fines and those who do not yet have a driver's license may even face a blocking period.
insurance becomes a problem
In the event of an accident with a bike that has been tuned to 50 km/h, liability insurance can refuse to cover you, so you can be left with the costs - for example for pain and suffering, loss of earnings, repairs, etc. And the manufacturers are also reacting more and more to manipulations. In Germany, for example, classic tuning kits are not allowed to be sold and they are not available from Amazon & Co. either. You have to resort to foreign providers on the Internet. In principle, this is how you build a new vehicle. Most electric scooters are designed for higher speeds that would also be allowed in other countries. In e-bikes, on the other hand, all components are designed for the maximum permissible speed of 25 km/h. In case of doubt, repairs are excluded!
the manufacturers recognize the tuning more and more often
After tuning, drive problems may mean that repairs are no longer possible. Bosch generally refuses to repair a modified engine, and other manufacturers behave in a similar way. It is also questionable whether the diagnostic tool can still be connected at all. Illegal tuning can also mean that the bike can no longer be moved at all. According to various reports, the manufacturers have already taken measures to counteract the bypassing of engine throttling. Some models "recognize" the manipulation. The motor support is then reduced and an error message appears in the display. However, this mainly applies to newer models. Manufacturers try to fight tuning in this way. So it is advisable such illegal modifications to avoid.
