In a league of its own: the 2023 Honda X-ADV!

The X-ADV is in a league of its own because the mix of adventure flair, two-cylinder power, weather protection, agility and DCT double-clutch transmission opens up completely new possibilities. The equipment includes Throttle by Wire (electronic throttle grip management), four driving modes plus user option and the safety-enhancing HSTC traction control. 22 liters of storage space and a USB charging socket can be used under the seat; this also includes a glove compartment in the bodywork in front of the driver. The X-ADV combines driving fun with practicality, is at home on asphalt as well as on off-road detours and shines in everyday life with double LED headlights plus daytime running lights, 5-inch TFT display and smartphone connectivity with voice control. The 2023 model year of the X-ADV is also enhanced by the attractive Shasta White color option, which will turn heads in all European markets.

2023 Honda X-ADV

In the case of motorcycles, innovative concepts rarely lead to the emergence of a completely new category. However, when Honda presented the new X-ADV in 2016, a unique adventure scooter, that is exactly what happened. It also meets the needs of commuters who use scooters or motorbikes to get to work. Equally helpful in everyday life are agile and easy handling, plenty of storage space and the most comfortable and efficient way to get around. Plus the suitability as a hobby and fun device, even on unpaved paths. Innovative developers from Honda combined everything together, resulting in a new and versatile vehicle type with a robust and elegant appearance; similar to an SUV on two wheels, which is as good for comfort in the city as unpaved paths. Although the X-ADV is equipped with everything that makes life in an urban environment comfortable, the look, performance and chassis exceed all expectations to inspire adventure with every ride.

In a league of its own: the 2023 Honda X-ADV!

The X-ADV, the essence of freedom in an exciting form, attracted a lot of attention and became a bestseller. As proof of the off-road capability, the Italian Renato Zocchi took part in the Gibraltar Rally in 2019 with a slightly modified X-ADV. After 7.000 kilometers over adventurous terrain, he achieved overall victory in class 2! For 2021, the X-ADV has been further optimized with increased engine power, reduced weight plus a design update and has once again increased in terms of inspiring practicality. In 2021, the X-ADV was Honda's second best-selling motorcycle over 350cc3 Displacement only surpassed by the mid-size bestseller CB650R. With the introduction of the new and attractive 'Shasta White' color option for model year 2023, the technically unchanged X-ADV cements its position as one of the coolest and most desirable two-wheelers available in Europe today.

Model overview

The parallel two-cylinder engine combines more than ample power in the lower to medium speed range with likeable refinement and exemplary fuel efficiency. The peak power is 58,6 hp (43,1 kW), the torque is an impressive 69 Nm. The throttle-by-wire-controlled driving programs offer four standard modes plus a user-defined user selection, the safety-enhancing HSTC traction control (Honda Selectable Torque Control) can be set in three stages. The unique dual-clutch transmission (DCT) controls different shifting patterns to match, depending on the selected driving mode and optionally on user input. The robust chassis consists of a tubular steel frame equipped with a 41 mm USD front wheel fork, a mono spring strut with Pro-Link lever linkage and an aluminum swing arm. A 17-inch front wheel and 15-inch rear wheel allow for amazingly safe handling, both straight and in curves.

In a league of its own: the 2023 Honda X-ADV!

The front wheel is slowed down by state-of-the-art double-disc brakes with radially mounted four-piston brake calipers that can be sensitively dosed. The X-ADV shines with a modern, dynamic design; the dual LED headlight illuminates with DRL daytime running lights (as on the CRF1100 Africa Twin), which contributes to optimized visibility to other road users. The side contoured seat makes it easier to reach the ground. The storage space has a volume of 22 liters and is equipped with a USB-C charging socket; a glove compartment in the front bodywork is also included. The TFT cockpit display features Honda's smartphone voice control system. The 2023 X-ADV is available in four color variants:

– Shasta White **New**
– Matt Ballistic Black Metallic
– Matt Iridium Gray Metallic
– Pearl Deep Mud Gray

Features

– Throttle by Wire¬ throttle grip, 58,6 hp (43,1 kW) power and 69 Nm torque
– Consumption only 3,6 liters per 100 km, Euro 5 compliant
– 48 hp (35 kW) possible for A2 driver’s license holders

The torque-optimized design of the liquid-cooled SOHC 8-valve parallel twin-cylinder engine ensures unusually powerful performance in the low to medium speed range. The long-stroke design and specially shaped combustion chambers promote plenty of pulling power even at low engine speeds, and the forward-leaning installation position of the engine shifts the center of gravity further down for optimum stability. The peak power is 58,6 hp (43,1 kW) at 6.750 rpm, the maximum torque is 69 Nm at 4.750 rpm. With a flying start from 30 km/h, the X-ADV needs only 1,7 seconds for the first 20 meters distance and only 3,2 seconds over a 50 meter distance. At a speed of 60 km, the crankshaft of the high-torque twin rotates at just 2.500 revolutions per minute.

In a league of its own: the 2023 Honda X-ADV!

A 2kW version is available for A35 license holders, which can be upgraded to full capacity by a Honda dealer in due course if desired. Two balancer shafts counteract vibrations without impairing the typical pulsation caused by the irregular firing order of the engine with its 270° offset crankshaft. Bore and stroke are 77 x 80 mm. Individual components are designed to perform multiple tasks. The camshaft drives the water pump, while one of the balancer shafts drives the oil pump. The constructive minimization of the moving engine parts makes the twin engine light, efficient and reliable. The Honda X¬-ADV consumes just 3,6 liters of fuel per 100 km. With the 13,2 liter tank, this results in a range of 366 km.

Engine electronics

In a league of its own: the 2023 Honda X-ADV!

- The throttle grip control via Throttle by Wire¬ technology enables four driving modes and additional individual adjustment via the user mode
– HSTC traction control adjustable in three stages

Thanks to the throttle-by-wire control, which transmits the driver's throttle grip commands via the control electronics to the throttle valves for mixture preparation, the X-ADV can be used to adapt the engine characteristics. Four standard driving modes as well as an individually configurable user mode are available for this. Mode selection is via the switch panel on the left of the handlebar.

  • Standard offers a balance between power delivery, engine braking and HSTC traction control intervention; the ABS regulates at the highest level.
  • Sport causes dynamic engine characteristics and engine braking with little intervention by the HSTC; and ABS control at the highest level.
  • Rain throttles to low power delivery and gentle engine braking; HSTC traction control and ABS regulate at the highest level.
  • Gravel offers high engine power and engine braking with low HSTC traction control and ABS intervention.
  • User mode allows individual settings for engine power and engine braking from low to medium to high, as well as low/medium/high/off for traction control.

The safety-enhancing HSTC traction control offers smoother and finer control as the throttle-by-wire system is able to optimally regulate the torque transferred to the rear wheel. There are three levels of traction control to choose from:

  • Level 1 allows minimal intervention for controlled rear wheel spin, for example on unpaved surfaces.
  • Level 2 is the default setting and provides confident traction for most tarmac driving conditions.
  • Level 3 ensures maximum control on slippery roads.

The HSTC traction control can also be switched off completely if required.

DCT dual clutch transmission

– The Riding Modes allow different shift patterns
– Individualized settings are possible in user mode, from smooth to sporty and dynamic

Honda's dual clutch transmission (DCT stands for Dual Clutch Transmission) is now in its 13th year of production, and over 200.000 two-wheelers with this technology have already found their way into customers' hands across Europe. The dual-clutch transmission makes driving easier by automatically changing gears. The electronic-hydraulic control also takes care of the metered actuation of the clutch for moving off. That is why there is no longer a clutch lever on machines with DCT. Simply twisting the throttle after a riding mode has been activated is enough to set off. The ingeniously simple operation quickly becomes a pleasant matter of course for drivers, which they are reluctant to do without.

In a league of its own: the 2023 Honda X-ADV!

Technically, the DCT system uses two clutches: one for starting and for gears one, three and five; the other for second, fourth, and sixth gears. Both are controlled electronically-hydraulically. With automated shifting, the system selects the next gear using the currently open clutch. While this closes electronically, the other opens at the same time – so that the newly selected gear can engage without any interruption in traction. The result is smooth, quick and seamless gear changes. The dual clutch transfers only minimal interruptions in drive to the rear wheel. Jolting and pitching movements of the machine are minimized, gear changes are effortless, direct and smooth. Additional advantages are: Stress-free driving in the city prevents the driver from losing his attention. Thanks to DCT, stalling when starting off can no longer occur. Shifting is also impossible, which as a bonus eliminates possible damage to the transmission gears.

In a league of its own: the 2023 Honda X-ADV!

The DCT system offers two modes of operation. On the one hand, the automatic setting (AT) with pre-programmed shift patterns, which constantly monitors the speed, the selected gear and the engine speed in order to automatically control the optimal shifting process. On the other hand, the manual operating mode (MT) for targeted gear changes via the shift paddles on the left of the handlebar fitting. Through the connection to the electronic Ride by Wire throttle grip, the automated DCT shift patterns are linked to the selected driving mode. Five automated shift patterns are available with the X-ADV. Stage 1 is linked to Rain mode; upshifts and downshifts take place at comparatively low engine speeds. Level 4 is linked to Sport mode. Here the DCT upshifts at higher engine speeds and downshifts earlier to increase engine braking. Level 2 is linked to the Standard driving mode. Level 3 is located between the Standard and Sport driving modes.

In a league of its own: the 2023 Honda X-ADV!

The off-road-oriented G shift pattern is used in Gravel riding mode. This has the property of reducing the slip on the rear wheel in a controlled manner, even if the driver keeps the accelerator open or opens the throttle valve in a controlled manner. This gives the driver a more direct feel for the traction on the rear wheel and allows them to slide in a controlled manner. Previously, this function had to be activated by a separate G-Switch; now it is part of the G shift pattern in the X-ADV's DCT.
In user mode, which can be configured as required, the driver can put together their own DCT shift pattern from the parameters of power development, engine braking, ABS function and three-stage adjustable traction control.

Styling & equipment

– Strikingly attractive, slim design
– Connectivity via 5 inch TFT display including smartphone voice control
– LED twin headlights with daytime running lights
– 22 liters of storage space, also with USB charging socket

The styling of the X-ADV, developed by Honda's European development center in Rome, has been even more modern, sharper and cooler since the facelift 2021. The LED twin headlights have daytime running lights (DRL). These adapt to the intensity of the ambient light and produce a pleasantly bright, perfect light, which increases safety. The X-ADV uses LED lighting technology all around, including the indicators and rear light. With a seat height of 820 mm and 910 mm wide handlebars, the driver enjoys a good overview of the traffic situation. The ergonomic seat has slimmer contours on the sides to ensure the best possible ground reach with your feet. The height-adjustable windshield can be adjusted to five positions without tools; the adjustment range is 139 mm.

Honda's Smartphone Voice Control System enables the use of a smartphone on the go. This can be used to make phone calls, receive e-mails, listen to music or do navigation. The information is displayed on the 5 inch TFT display. A headset is required for use, and the smartphone must also be connected to the vehicle via Bluetooth. The system can also be controlled with voice commands using the buttons on the left switch unit. Hand guards made of plastic keep wind, cold and rain out and protect hands and levers from rockfalls on off-road excursions or unwanted impacts on narrow country lanes. A 2,5mm thick aluminum skid plate protects the underside of the X-ADV.

The 22-litre storage space under the seat offers space for a full-face helmet. An integrated LED light helps in the dark. A USB-C charging socket can also be found in the storage compartment. The parking brake lever located on the side (necessary on DCT bikes so that rolling away on inclines when the engine is switched off without clutch traction can be prevented) leaves space for an additional glove compartment. The center stand with tilt sensor allows you to park on a slope without the risk of tipping over. The smart key system offers pleasant ease of use in everyday life. Carried in the driver's pocket, no additional key is required. As soon as the smart key is within range of the vehicle, the main switch can be operated. This gives the driver control of the ignition and steering lock, as well as the fuel filler cap and the seat lock. The smart key also unlocks the optional smart top case. In addition, the indicators have an answer-back function.

In a league of its own: the 2023 Honda X-ADV!

The X-ADV rear turn signals have an Emergency Stop Signal (ESS) function. At a negative acceleration of 6,0 m/s2 and a minimum speed of 53 km/h with the brake applied at the same time, the hazard warning lights flash to warn other road users of an abrupt stop. The turn signals are self-resetting. This function is not controlled by a simple timer, but uses the on-board electronics to measure the wheel revolutions on the front and rear wheels when turning and when changing lanes. The detection of the driving dynamics and the situation allows a meaningfully adapted and therefore practical resetting of the turn signal function, which contributes to increased driving safety.
