More efficient? Changing the downpipe makes it possible.

The downpipe ("Trouser") sits between the turbocharger and the exhaust system and often contains (depending on the vehicle type) the pre-catalyst and / or main catalyst and the lambda probe. A larger diameter of the downpipe brings increased performance and a richer sound.

How does the larger diameter of the downpipe affect?

More efficient? Changing the downpipe makes it possible.

Due to the larger diameter of the exhaust backpressure decreases, whereby the thermal and mechanical load of the turbocharger decreases. The torque and the total power increase, also the engine sounds fuller and roaring. Drivers of tuned vehicles also appreciate the new feel of the turbocharger (Gasoline and diesel alike). A tuning of the downpipe is possible in the cars of almost all well-known brands, including the BMW, VW, Opel and Ford. It is important in tuning the use of a downpipe that fits exactly to the vehicle. Only then will the desired performance increases, which can be quite considerable, depending on the vehicle model. Due to the falling temperature, the mixture in the turbocharger burns much more efficiently. However, those drivers are primarily thinking of a new downpipe that needs a different, "roaring" sound. This comes about through the changed exhaust gas speed. The sound just sounds richer because more low frequencies are generated.

Advantages of tuning the downpipe

In summary, downpipe tuning has several effects, all based on reducing exhaust back pressure due to the larger downpipe diameter:

  • decreasing exhaust gas temperature, lower thermal load
  • decreasing exhaust back pressure, lower mechanical load
  • Increase in performance
  • higher torque
  • partly significant increase in horsepower
  • improved driving experience
  • better sound, audible even in the vehicle
  • What should be considered during installation and approval?

There are enthusiastic tuners who install the downpipe themselves. This requires special tools and technical knowledge as well as great craftsmanship. Most drivers prefer to go to the tuning workshop. The seat of the downpipe between mid-silencer and turbocharger caused during conversion a certain amount of time, which arises even in the few cases in which the downpipe is attached to the catalyst. The tuning of the downpipe is almost always on requiring approval Conversion, the vehicle must then be presented to the inspector of a monitoring organization (TÜV, GTÜ, DEKRA, KÜS etc.). For approval, some specifications must be met. For this purpose, the manufacturers of downpipes and the tuning workshops provide the necessary assistance.

    • Dear Sir/Madam,

Thank you for your request. tuningblog.eu is an online magazine. We report on vehicles, we test products and we offer marketing for companies on the subject of cars / motorcycles / road traffic. However, we don't sell any products, we don't do any conversions and we don't sell any vehicles. Unfortunately, we cannot help you further and ask for your understanding.

      Kind regards
