Tip: Measurement and improvement of the axle geometry

The axis geometry is the position of the axes. It can worsen through potholes and run over curbs. This is what the driver hears and feels (for example, by a left or right spin), it can also be measured and set again.

What significance does the axle geometry have?

An odd axle geometry affects many vehicles (about a third), many drivers do not feel that. But the tires of the vehicle wear off unilaterally, the fuel consumption increases, the driving behavior worsens. After the wheel alignment and the precise adjustment of the axle geometry, the negative effects disappear. Wheel alignment is recommended once a year. Advantages of a correct axis geometry are:

  • longer mileage of the tires
  • better grip, thus better handling
  • absolute directional stability
  • longer durability of wearing parts

If a vehicle is to receive a higher performance through tuning, a correct axle geometry is indispensable. Tuning workshops therefore routinely carry out wheel alignment. But also all other motorists, who are traveling with "normal" cars, should take this measure to heart. The correct track naturally brings more safety with it. There does not have to be an immediate spin to one side. Even minimal deterioration of the axle geometry already affect the driving and braking behavior, because the car is no longer optimal on his tires.

Achsgeometrie: meaning of "fall" and "track"

For optimal driving characteristics, the wheels should be parallel to each other and perpendicular to the road. The track is the parallelism or the deviation of this in the alignment of the wheels to each other, both the two wheels of an axle and the front and rear wheels to each other. The "fall" is the measured angle between the actual wheelbase and the perpendicular to the ground. A wrong track leads to a right or left spin. A wrong fall leads to one-sided driving off the tires, a deteriorated braking behavior (due to the lower traction of the sloping wheels) and a slight roll when driving straight ahead. There is the positive fall, where the wheel is bent outwards, and the negative fall, where it tilts in at the top.

Restore the axis geometry

The workshop carries out a wheel alignment (Laser or 3D wheel alignment) and then realigns the axes until the correct axis geometry is restored. This can be done on a regular basis during the inspection, during heavy loads in the annual cycle and in any case after repairs to the chassis.

His collection of books, magazines and brochures on the subject of car tuning has now reached such proportions that he himself has become a walking reference work for the tuning scene.  More about Thomas

  1. Until I was pointed out recently in the workshop, I didn't even know that there was an axle geometry. It is logical that you should set the track in the car. Since my car is relatively new, I haven't thought about it yet. Fortunately, the misalignment was discovered by accident.
