These changes will bring the year 2021 for drivers!

  • Vehicle tax: In the future, CO₂ emissions will be more relevant when calculating the tax rate
  • Driving license test: Practical exam also possible in automatic vehicles from April 1st
  • Penalties for gawkers: New regulation closes important loophole since January 1st

The Corona year 2020 demanded a lot from everyone and apparently little has happened apart from the pandemic. But there were actually legal changes in the past year that are also of interest to motorists. For example, there was a change in the vehicle tax. But there were other changes.

Climate protection agreement: This is how the assessment of CO₂ will change vehicle tax in the future

Before Corona, the Fridays for Future demonstrations were the focus of public interest. In view of global warming, climate protection is becoming increasingly important. Politicians are now finally trying to readjust. In the future, for example, the CO₂ emissions from vehicles will play a greater role in vehicle tax. If CO₂ emissions exceed 95 grams per kilometer, an additional 2 to 4 euros more vehicle tax will be incurred in the future.

Electric vehicles, on the other hand, should continue to receive more support. E-cars that are or were newly registered between May 18, 2011 and December 31, 2025 are exempt from vehicle tax. In addition, the so-called innovation bonus for the purchase of electric vehicles is doubled. Owners of particularly low-emission vehicles can also hope for a discount: Corresponding vehicles that were or will be registered between June 12, 2020 and December 31, 2024 should benefit from a vehicle tax reduction of 30 euros.

The desired limitation of CO₂ emissions is also likely to have a stronger impact on gasoline prices: The CO₂ price per ton is expected to be 2025 euros by 25, after which it will rise to 55 euros. According to estimates by experts, higher costs at the filling stations are to be expected in the coming months.

Changes also for driving license applicants: Longer tests and driving tests in automatic vehicles

From April 1, 2021, there will also be changes for learner drivers. On the one hand, the duration of the driving tests is extended by 10 minutes. On the other hand, however, applicants for a driving license will in future also be able to take the practical driving test in vehicles with automatic transmission. However, as part of the training, ten hours of practical driving experience must be completed in a switch truck so that the driver's license holder can still drive in a switch truck without restrictions after passing the test.

Penalties for gawkers: Images of deceased accident victims are now also punishable

In recent years, there has also been a lot of discussion about a significant loophole in the law regarding the penalties for spectators and onlookers. So far, the personal rights of the deceased - and their relatives - have not been protected. Only the depiction of still living accident victims could be punished with up to two years imprisonment according to § 201a StGB.

This significant loophole in the law has been closed since January 1, 2021: Since then, onlookers who violate the personal rights of the deceased have to face the same penalty. The creation of pictures of accident victims is therefore now in any case a criminal offense, regardless of whether the victims are still alive or not, whether the pictures are published or only remain on their own mobile phones.

By the way: How things will go with the StVO amendment is still not foreseeable. The new catalog of fines has currently been suspended nationwide due to a formal error in order to circumvent legal uncertainties. It remains questionable whether the traffic regulations chaos will finally be cleared up in the coming months.
