A roof tent for pick-ups? The 2023 DOT Alpaca Camper is here!

As the name suggests, roof tents are tents that are attached to the roof of vehicles. With pick-ups, however, this is difficult because they only have a small roof area but a long loading area. Therefore, the Hookie Co. GmbH under the brand Days On Tracks (DOT) developed an innovative sleeping cabin for pick-ups. The Alpaca campers, which is attached to the pick-up by means of a clamping system similar to a hard top, consists of a base made of aluminum and wood composite material. The wooden panels used come from sustainable forestry and can be fully opened to allow easy access to the loading area. The roof tent is located on this basic construction, which is folded up like a pop-up roof on a mobile home and is surrounded by tent fabric on three sides. The manufacturer also states that a roof rack can be mounted on the roof of the vehicle and access to the sleeping area with integrated mattress is via the base structure underneath.

The entire tent shell can also be removed to create additional storage space on the loading area. However, the alpaca camper is not comparable to a full-fledged pick-up cabin, which usually includes a bed, a kitchen, a seating area and usually a small bathroom. Apart from the tent, the Alpaca Camper does not offer any other camping components. Camping stoves, cool boxes and other accessories must therefore be purchased and transported separately. The manufacturer states that the camper was made in a special lightweight construction and weighs a total of 170 kilograms. However, that's not a small amount, which also applies to the basic price of €8.900.

Technical data for the DOT Alpaca Camper: Total weight: approx. 170 kg Height: 65 cm Bed dimensions: 2,50 mx 1,30 m Height open: 2,50 m

The tent is available in black, sunny yellow, bright olive or white. However, other accessories for the tent should also be available. The Alpaca Camper is not yet available, but the first models will be available between May and June. At first glance, the DOT Alpaca Camper looks appealing with its elegant wood-tent combination. However, we consider the price, the accessibility and the lack of camping equipment to be problems. In summary, the DOT Alpaca Camper is an innovative sleeping cabin for pickup trucks, which is particularly suitable for those who do not yet have a hard top and want a roof tent.
