The new Mercedes-AMG SL: The new edition of an icon!

With the help of numerous sensors, cameras and radar, the driver assistance systems monitor the traffic and the surroundings of the new roadster. If necessary, they can intervene at lightning speed. As in the new generations of Mercedes C- and S-Class, the driver is supported by numerous new or expanded systems. In everyday situations, he can drive even more comfortably and safely thanks to the relief of speed adjustment, distance control, steering and lane changes. In the event of danger, the systems help him to react appropriately to an impending collision. The functionality of the systems is made visible by a new display concept in the instrument cluster.

The new assistance display in the instrument cluster presents the functionality of the driver assistance systems in a comprehensible and transparent way in a full-screen view. The driver recognizes his car, lanes, lane markings and other road users such as cars, trucks and two-wheelers in a spatially abstracted manner. The system status and functionality of the assistants are visualized on the basis of this representation of the environment. The new animated assistance display is based on a 3-D scene generated in real time. This high-quality and dynamic display makes the functionality of the driver assistance systems transparent in an augmented reality driving experience.

The following are the most important innovations in the systems in the new SL:

ATTENTION ASSIST

The standard system can recognize typical signs of fatigue and severe inattentiveness on the part of the driver and prompts him with a warning to take a break in good time. 

Active distance assistant DISTRONIC

This intelligent system can automatically maintain the preselected distance from vehicles in front on all types of roads - freeways, country roads and in the city. They are new

  • Collision avoidance reaction to stationary road users up to a maximum of 100 km / h
    (previously: 60 km / h),
  • Choice of the dynamics of DISTRONIC in MBUX, independent of DYNAMIC SELECT. 

Active steering assistant

It assists the driver in following the lane at speeds of up to 210 km / h. Are new

  • Lane detection also with 360-degree camera,
  • significantly increased availability and cornering performance on country roads,
  • increased lane centering on motorways,
  • Situation-specific off-lane driving style (e.g. formation of an emergency lane, but also orientation on the edge of the lane on country roads without center markings). 

Traffic sign assistant

In addition to conventionally signposted speed limits, it also recognizes gantries and construction site signs. Are new

  • Stop sign warning function - warning against crossing a stop sign,
  • Red traffic light warning function - warning of crossing a red traffic light. 

Active lane keeping assistant

Active Lane Keeping Assist uses a camera to detect when lane markings and the edges of the lane are being driven over at speeds of between 60 and 250 km / h, and helps the driver to avoid leaving the lane unintentionally. If there is a risk of collision with identified road users in the neighboring lane, for example overtaking or oncoming vehicles, the system also intervenes. Are new

  • the reaction to the edges of the road, for example a sod,
  • particularly intuitive intervention via the steering,
  • setting the sensitivity via a menu (early, medium, late). 

Active lane change assistant

Active Lane Change Assist provides the driver with cooperative support when changing lanes to the neighboring lane. The lane change to the left or right is only supported if, according to the sensors, the neighboring one

The lane is separated from your own by an interrupted lane marking and no vehicles have been detected in the relevant safety area. Are new

  • the longer search phase (15 seconds instead of 10 seconds, depending on the country) in which the lane change can take place, and
  • the higher lateral dynamics (depending on the country). 

Active emergency stop assistant

The Active Emergency Stop Assist brakes the vehicle in its own lane to a standstill when it detects that the driver is no longer intervening in the driving process while driving. This works in the new SL even if Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC with Steering Assist is not switched on. Another innovation: seat belt tensioners and brake jerks as the last pointers before braking is initiated.

Active Brake Assist with an intersection function

Active Brake Assist uses the sensors installed in the vehicle to register a risk of collision with vehicles driving ahead, crossing or oncoming vehicles. In the event of an impending collision, the system can warn the driver visually and acoustically. If the driver brakes too weakly, it is also possible to support the driver by increasing the braking torque in accordance with the situation and to initiate an autonomous emergency braking if the driver does not react. Are new

  • the turning function (including crossing pedestrians when turning),
  • the expansion of the crossing function to overland routes (up to 120 km / h instead of 72 km / h),
  • the warning and braking in oncoming traffic. 

AActive blind spot assistant and exit warning function

The Active Blind Spot Assist can warn of side collisions optically and when the indicator is activated, also acoustically at speeds of around 10 to 200 km / h. If the driver ignores the warnings and nevertheless initiates a lane change, the system can intervene to correct the lane at the last moment at speeds above 30 km / h by applying brakes on one side. In addition, the exit warning function can signal that a vehicle (including bicycles) is driving past in the critical area when the vehicle is stationary. This function is available when the vehicle is stationary and up to three minutes after the ignition has been switched off. Are new

  • the addition of the danger display with the help of active ambient lighting (also with the exit warning);
  • Thanks to the cameras of the MBUX Interior Assistant, a hazard display can even be made when the driver or front passenger just move their hand towards the door handle.

DIGITAL LIGHT with projection of warning symbols onto the road

The revolutionary DIGITAL LIGHT headlight technology is standard on board the SL models. It enables innovative functions, such as the projection of auxiliary markings or warning symbols onto the road. DIGITAL LIGHT has a light module with three powerful LEDs in each headlight, the light of which is refracted and directed using 1,3 million micro mirrors. The resolution per vehicle is therefore over 2,6 million pixels. The micromirrors are located on the area the size of a thumbnail. A control unit with a powerful graphics computer generates a permanent video stream to the mirrors via an HDMI-like connection. DIGITAL LIGHT thus picks up on the technology of video beamers. The new headlight can be recognized by its concave lens.

The high beam assistant is highly precise when it comes to fading out oncoming traffic or traffic signs. The light-dark boundaries and the light distribution of all other adaptive light functions are also displayed with significantly improved precision, which optimizes the illumination, for example, in fog light, motorway light or city light.

The assistance functions are groundbreaking:

  • Warning of detected construction sites through the projection of an excavator symbol on the roadway,
  • Warning and marking by a spotlight on detected pedestrians at the edge of the road,
  • Indication of traffic lights, stop signs or no entry by projecting a warning symbol onto the lane,
  • Support on narrow roadways (construction site) by projecting guide markings onto the roadway,
  • Display of the start of the cooperative lane change,
  • Warning and directional instructions when Lane Keeping Assist or Blind Spot Assist detects a danger. 

Preventive occupant protection PRE-SAFE®

The Mercedes-AMG SL already offers the unique preventive occupant protection PRE-SAFE® as standard. In dangerous situations, for example, PRE-SAFE® tightens the driver's and front passenger's seat belts as a precaution or moves the front passenger seat to a more favorable position in the event of a collision. For this, PRE-SAFE® uses the sensors of other systems such as ESP® or the driver assistance systems.

The safety of the little ones has also been thought of: child seat attachments based on the i-Size standard with Isofix anchors and TopTether are located on the rear seats and on the front passenger seat. To ensure that the passenger airbag is switched off for safety reasons for small passengers as co-pilots, an automatic child seat recognition system is installed on the passenger seat: A mat integrated into the seat surface recognizes whether a child seat is installed based on the weight distribution. Special child seats with transponders are therefore not required.
