Ford completes the Puma product line: At the top is now the new Puma ST, the first European performance crossover SUV from Ford. It costs from 31.121 euros and can be ordered immediately. The power source for the Puma ST is the 147 kW (200 PS) version of the EcoBoost turbo direct injection engine with a displacement of 1 liters. The new Puma ST makes further use of the possibilities of the B-segment platform from Ford and counteracts the higher center of gravity of an SUV with a specially developed chassis. The rear twist beam has a strength of 2.000 Nm / deg. This value is 40 percent above that of the Ford Fiesta ST and 50 percent above that of the Puma standard versions. A stabilizer with a diameter of 28 millimeters, which is integrated into the rear U-section, reduces the tendency to roll in curves, as does its front, 24 millimeter thick counterpart. The new Puma ST is the only vehicle in its segment that can optionally be equipped with a mechanical LSD limited-slip differential from Quaife (LSD = Limited-Slip Differential). It is available as part of the optional performance package and optimizes traction on the driven front axle, which is reflected in both improved driving behavior and minimized understeer, especially at corner exit. The lock prevents the unloaded wheel from spinning on the inside of the curve and transfers the drive torque to the wheel that has the better grip.

In fine-tuned interaction with Torque Vectoring Control, the system also improves road holding and directional stability by reducing the tendency to understeer in bends through targeted braking interventions on the inside wheel. Result: a successful balance of optimized grip on dry roads and good-natured self-steering behavior in the wet. Directional stability, agility and responsiveness of the performance model also benefit from the patented force vectoring springs from Ford. The individual, side-bound and counter-wound springs exert vector forces on the rear suspension. In this way, cornering forces are diverted directly into the springs, which effectively reduces side tilt. There are also frequency-reactive twin-tube dampers from Hitachi at the front and rear. On the one hand, its damping behavior counteracts the side slope and on the other hand it absorbs minor road bumps at higher speeds.

The steering of the new Puma ST has a gear ratio of 11,4: 1. It thus implements steering commands almost 25 percent more directly than the control of the Puma basic models. To achieve this effect, Ford has provided the front steering knuckle with a shorter steering arm and the rack with a more direct translation - these measures noticeably improve the reaction to steering movements. "The steering is the focus of every ST. It is the crucial interface between driver and road. The new Ford Puma ST turns extremely well. The direct and precise reaction of the vehicle to steering commands conveys trust - an important prerequisite for a high level of driving pleasure“, Reports Stefan Münzinger.

Tires: Pilot Sport 4S on standard 19-inch wheels

The tires of the new Puma ST represent another essential factor for the successful synthesis of sportiness and high driving comfort, which is considered one of the most popular features of a crossover SUV. Ford Performance worked closely with Michelin to develop a type of tire that fully exploits the strengths of the tailor-made chassis. The Pilot Sport 4S efficiently brings the extra traction made possible by the mechanical differential lock onto the road. The standard 19-inch alloy wheels, which Ford offers either in magnetite premium paint or with a high-sheen finish, are no less striking. Just as consistently, Ford Performance optimized the braking performance at ST level. The developers also opted for 325 millimeter brake discs at the front - an increase of 17 percent compared to the standard Puma versions. At the rear, the brakes access discs with a diameter of 271 millimeters. By fine-tuning the brake booster, they optimized the controllability, the braking feel and the feedback from the brakes, which are essential for a sporty driving style.

The highly developed 147 kW version (200 hp) of the 1,5 liter EcoBoost direct petrol injection engine celebrated its premiere in the multi-award-winning Ford Fiesta ST. It comes up with advanced turbo-charging, high-pressure injection and independent timing adjustment of the two camshafts (twin-independent variable cam timing). This configuration benefits both the sporty driving performance and the fuel efficiency of the new Puma ST. The three-cylinder architecture of the all-aluminum engine delivers high torque even at low speeds. A radial-axial turbocharger and an integrated exhaust manifold are used to increase performance. The latter shortens the distance that the exhaust gases travel from the cylinder to the turbocharger - the required boost pressure builds up more quickly and the “turbo lag” is practically eliminated. Reinforced engine mountings prevent unwanted movements of the engine, especially when cornering and increase the smoothness in everyday operation.

In addition to a special air intake tract and the performance-enhancing, flow-optimized exhaust system, the active control of the exhaust valves also reinforces the three-cylinder engine's sound, which is already conceptually very robust. The Ford Performance team not only tuned the engine noise to be purely sporty, but also took into account the upscale crossover SUV character of the Puma ST. Therefore, its noise level is almost 1 dB lower than that of the Ford Fiesta ST with the same engine.

320 Nm torque at 2.500 to 3.500 rpm

While the three-cylinder achieves its peak output of 147 kW (200 PS) at 6.000 tours, the maximum torque of 320 Nm is constant between 2.500 and 3.500 revolutions. This torque plateau has the effect of very linear acceleration and faster response.

Just as important to the developers as the dynamic design of the 1,5-liter engine was its efficiency. It is the first three-cylinder engine to have an innovative combustion chamber shutdown. If, for example, the full performance potential is not used in overrun mode or at steady moderate speed, the engine management automatically stops the fuel supply to a cylinder. The system switches the combustion chamber off and on again in just 14 milliseconds - 20 times faster than the blink of an eye. This technology plays a key role in the expected combined NEDC consumption of just 6,0 liters / 100 km with 134 g / km CO2 emissions1 (WLTP values: 6,8 liters / 100 km and 155 g CO2 / km). A petrol particle filter also reduces soot emissions.

The power transmission in the new Puma ST is handled by the manual 6-speed gearbox known from the Ford Fiesta ST with its very smooth gear changes. In contrast to the crisp small car, the performance crossover SUV has a shorter rear-axle ratio, but has attractive, 19-inch high alloy wheels as standard. In this configuration, the new Puma ST achieves a top value of probably less than seven seconds for the sprint from 100 to 2 km / h220 and an expected top speed of 2 km / hXNUMX.

Four driving modes highlight the versatility of the new Puma ST on the road. The drivers can choose from very different characteristics and use the great potential of the performance crossover SUV. While the "race track" mode, which is suitable for circuit tracks, focuses on maximum driving pleasure, the "Eco" mode, which is available for the first time in an ST model, focuses on particularly efficient driving. The driving modes in detail:

  1. "Normal" - Characteristic map of the engine control, traction control, electronic safety and stability program (ESP), active control of the exhaust valves and the electro-mechanical power steering EPAS are calibrated for the most natural possible response and pleasant feedback.
  2. "Eco" - The mapping of the engine control and the characteristic curve of the accelerator pedal are designed for maximum fuel efficiency.
  3. "Sports" - Sharper engine mapping and accelerator pedal characteristics as well as a modified tuning of the power steering provide more feedback and control for committed journeys. The active engine noise control valve opens and gives the vehicle an intense sporty note. The "Sport" mode can be activated using a dedicated button on the steering wheel.
  4. "Racetrack" - All settings responsible for the vehicle dynamics are optimized for the fastest possible lap times on the racetrack. The traction control is deactivated, the ESP intervenes so cautiously that it also allows yaw and lateral movements typical of racing.

The three-stage ESP also gives the driver the choice of whether to intervene comprehensively in unstable driving situations, allow some slip or be completely deactivated. The result is a vehicle with unique characteristics that rightly bears its name suffix “ST” - ST stands for Sport Technologies.

Launch Control - part of the performance package

The Launch Control - available as part of the optional performance package - is intended exclusively for use on closed-off circuits. With this automatic start, the driver can activate the maximum acceleration capacity of the new Puma ST from a standing start. When the system is activated via a specific control unit on the steering wheel, a graphic display also appears on the 12,3-inch digital instrument panel. If the driver is standing at full throttle with Launch Control activated, the system turns the engine up to the speed limit - the digital graphic then shows that the new Puma ST is "ready to jump". As soon as the driver lets the clutch come off completely, ESC, traction control, torque vectoring control and torque steer compensation interlock and regulate traction and torque for optimal acceleration.

Sensational appearance and high-tech equipment features

The ST version consistently continues the dynamic body design of the Ford Puma with its coupé-like sloping roof line and the muscular wheel houses. Even if the modifications are extreme: form and function always remain in harmony. The front lip with the Ford Performance logo integrated into the front bumper is a spectacular eye-catcher, but it also increases aerodynamic downforce by almost 80 percent. This benefits the directional stability and traction. The larger roof spoiler optimizes the aerodynamics, as does the eye-catching diffuser element in the rear bumper. The independent design of the upper and lower radiator grille once again serves as a stylistic element of the ST model family and at the same time optimizes engine cooling.

In addition to Obsidian Black Metallic, Dynamic Blue Metallic, Fantastic Red Metallic, Frost White, Fancy Gray and Magnetic Gray Metallic, the Furious Green Metallic, which is only available for the ST, is available as exterior colors for the body. The high-gloss black finish of the roof, radiator grille frame, exterior mirror housings and rear roof polishing serves as a further characteristic of the new ST variant.

The interior is just as charismatic - even before you get in, because the exterior mirrors, which can be folded in from the factory, project the ST logo onto the ground when the vehicle is unlocked. Inside, heated Recaro sports seats welcome the driver and front passenger. The seats made of non-slip Miko Dinamica with embroidered ST logo ensure excellent support. Ford Performance door sill trims, a leather-covered steering wheel with a flattened underside and a gear knob with ST badge add further highlights. The expressive interior is rounded off by the gray decorative seams on the seats, gear knob cuffs and ST-branded floor mats.

Just like the other Puma equipment versions, the Puma ST also has a luggage compartment volume of 456 liters3, which is outstanding in the crossover segment. Then there is the innovative Ford MegaBox. This flexibly usable storage space provides 81 liters of additional space below the trunk floor, so that there is space in the rear of the new Puma ST, for example, for two upright golf bags.

With an inductive charging station for appropriately equipped mobile devices, the heated windscreen, a park pilot system at the front and rear, and windscreen wipers with rain sensors, the Puma ST standard equipment includes numerous comfort features. Also on board: the Ford SYNC 3 communication and entertainment system. Its audio and navigation functions can be operated either with simple voice commands4 or via the eight-inch touchscreen, which shows the Ford Performance logo when it starts up. To integrate compatible smartphones, the system is equipped with the free interface standards Apple CarPlay and Android Auto ™. The standard premium sound system from B&O with an amplifier output of 575 watts impresses with its brilliant sound.

Standard FordPass Connect modem

Using the standard FordPass Connect Modem5, numerous functions can be operated remotely via smartphone and the FordPass App6 - such as locking and unlocking or locating the parked vehicle. The modem also receives the cloud-based local hazard warnings7. They warn the vehicle occupants of dangerous spots on the route ahead. In this way, the driver learns of obstacles early on, even if they are not yet visible to the eye because of a curve or vehicles driving ahead.

The package of advanced driver assistance systems includes, among other things, Pre-Collision Assist including a collision warning system with pedestrian and bicycle detection7, Active Parking Assist with parking and exit functions7, Blind Spot Assist (BLIS - Blind Spot Information System incl. Cross Traffic Alert) with emergency braking function when reversing out of parking spaces7 as well as a cruise control system. "The new Puma ST has many practical advantages, impresses with its high-quality appearance and attractive SUV proportions - but at the same time it is a real ST with maximum driving fun for the road“, Sums up Stefan Münzinger.
