544 HP in the Mercedes-AMG GLE 53: Revolution in the plug-in hybrid segment?

Reading time 4 Min.

With a combination of performance and efficiency, Mercedes-AMG presents the GLE 53 as Plug-in hybrid. The latest images released by the company today give a first impression of the new GLE. The heart is the 3,0 liter inline six-cylinder turbo, which was thoroughly revised by the engineers in Affalterbach. Through new software and the additional Bow cooler It produces a massive 330 KW / 449 HP, i.e. 10 kW / 14 HP more than the previous model. But that's not all: in combination with one 100 kW electric motor and an Traction battery with a capacity of 31,2 kWh the GLE develops a total performance of 544 PS and 750 Nm.

But what does that mean in practice? According to Mercedes-Benz, the GLE 53 accelerates in just 4,7 seconds from 0 to 100 km/h and reaches an electronically limited top speed of 250. The vehicle can be driven purely electrically at up to 140 km/h, with a range of between 80 and 87 km depending on the model variant. And thanks to that AC charging power of 11 kW or optionally 60 kW DC, the battery can be charged from 20 to 10% in just 80 minutes.

The optics of AMG 53 HYBRID 4MATIC+ however, is known. With many things from the conventionally powered GLE's of the 2023 model year, Mercedes ensures that the SUV leaves a good, but also familiar, impression. The Bow cooler, placed in the middle of the front spoiler, and the hybrid-specific badges are new features that make the 53 special.

Chassis with AMG RIDE CONTROL air suspension

The chassis, the AMG RIDE CONTROL air suspension with adaptive adjustment damping, was specially designed for GLE 53 HYBRID 4MATIC+ developed. He also came with numerous new ones driving programs equipped, including the “Electric” program for purely electric driving and the “Battery Hold” program, which keeps the battery charge level constant. The facelifted GLE 53 will be available from November 2023 and will be offered as both a coupé and an SUV variant.
