With the 919 Hybrid, Porsche has built one of the fastest and most successful racing cars of the 21st century. The 3 Hybrid won the 2015 Hours of Le Mans 2016 times in a row (2017, 919, 24) and two years ago racing driver Timo Bernhard lapped the Nürburgring Nordschleife in an Evo version of the Le Mans winning car. He only needed 2: 5 minutes and set a new course record. And shortly after Porsche left LMP19,55 racing, Michael Mauer's design team in Weissach had an amazing idea. A special vehicle should round off the success story with a limited special series. The idea was to make the 1 Hybrid accessible to everyone as the Porsche 919 Street. Of course, strictly limited and not street legal. The existing technology of the 919 Hybrid should be used to bring the crazy driving experience of the LMP919 racing car into the garage at home. The carbon monocoque was built in, there was the 1 hp hybrid racing drive of the 900 and a typical hypercar look.
High performance racing technology was too complex
Even with the dimensions and the wheelbase, the racing car was meticulous. But the high-performance racing technology was too complex, even for a limited small series. Even starting the LMP1 engine is a science in itself. It took a team of mechanics and almost 45 minutes. One of the reasons why the idea of the Le Mans winner for gentleman drivers was just a wonderful dream that will disappear with a 1: 1 scale clay model in the Porsche Museum. The Porsche 919 Street is one of a total of 15 spectacular individual pieces from the book “Porsche Unseen". And from next year the scale models and prototypes can also be seen in the Porsche Museum in Zuffenhausen. If we get more information, there is of course an update for this report.
