On the "Way to ZERO": Volkswagen is expanding its successful ID with the new ID.5. Family. The company is thus accelerating the electrification of its new vehicle fleet and is also entering a new market segment. The elegant and expressive E-SUV Coupé has the new ID.Software 3.0 with, among other things, improved charging performance and voice control. With the use of swarm data and the latest generation of driver assistance systems, Volkswagen is also taking the next step towards automated driving.
Volkswagen ID.5 and ID.5 GTX
“The ID.5 is electric, sporty and elegant. Our premium SUV coupé with a purely electric drive is another milestone in our ACCELERATE strategy, ”says Ralf Brandstätter, CEO of the brand. “He offers local CO2-neutral driving fun for a discerning customer group. We are entering a completely new market segment with it. ”Elegant and dynamic design, excellent aerodynamics, range suitable for everyday use. The new ID.5 and the sporty ID.5 GTX with dual motor all-wheel drive are the new top models of the ID that are suitable for long journeys. Family. Like all ID. Models on the modular electric drive kit (MEB) from Volkswagen.
aerodynamic, expressive, sporty
“The ID.5 stands for the body style of the future: aerodynamic, expressive, sporty and, thanks to the MEB, short overhangs,” says Jozef Kabaň, Head of Volkswagen Design. “That's why we can create a large interior space despite the dynamic roof line. That was not possible until now. ”The new software generation 3.0 allows updates and additional functions to be installed“ over-the-air ”.
This means that the ID.5 can stay up to date for a long time. Innovative assistance systems such as Travel Assist with swarm data enable an even more relaxed and predictive driving experience. The new optional Park Assist Plus with memory function carries out personalized parking processes on request. The 4599 mm (ID.5 GTX: 4582 mm) long E-SUV Coupé from Volkswagen will start in 2022 with three engines. With the ID.5, an electric motor in the rear takes over the drive. In the ID.5 GTX, an electric motor each on the front and rear axles form the dual-motor all-wheel drive.
electronic driving dynamics manager
"The electronic vehicle dynamics manager is a groundbreaking development from Volkswagen," says Thomas Ulbrich, Brand Board Member for Technical Development. “We have networked it with other important control systems, in the ID.5 GTX it also works together with the all-wheel drive control. As a result, the sporty driving pleasure, traction and driving safety are on a completely new top level. ”All ID.5 engines use a large, long-distance battery. The low drag coefficients of 0,26 and 0,27 (ID.5 GTX) promote efficiency and range. The integrated spoiler in the wide-opening, aerodynamically shaped tailgate also contributes to this. The electric cooling air blinds in the front end of the car only open when necessary to ensure optimal airflow.
The new E-SUV Coupé from Volkswagen looks independent and unique from every perspective. The characteristic LED technology with light lines at the front (optional) and rear clearly shows the ID.5 as a member of the ID. Family out. The differentiated bumper, the painted door paneling and the new roof line, among other things, distinguish the E-SUV Coupé from the ID.4 global car. The expressive coupé design has a high recognition value. The ID.5 GTX appears even more dynamic with its larger air inlet and the standard IQ.Light LED matrix headlights with intelligent high beam and 3D LED taillights. His driving dynamics manager networks the control systems of the drive and chassis. On request, an adaptive DCC chassis ensures the best possible driving dynamics. ID.5 and ID.5 GTX sail in speed level D, while in mode B they recuperate.
The new “body style” and the lounge-like room concept underline the innovative strength of Volkswagen and its ID. Family. Despite the coupé-like shape, the ID.5 has only 12 mm less headroom in the rear than the Volkswagen ID.4. The long wheelbase of 2766 mm allows space in the interior similar to that of an SUV from higher vehicle classes. The trunk volume is up to 549 liters. Materials and workmanship are on a premium level. The cover materials are different depending on the interior variant. Perforated ID. Logos in the upper area of the backrests identify the optional top sport seats.
The ultra-modern digital cockpit offers a new operating concept. The driver display and the high-resolution multimedia system impress with their brilliant presentation. A novel, optional augmented reality head-up display reflects additional information into the driver's field of vision. The new ID. Software 3.0 improves, among other things, the natural language control ("Hello ID."). It is now capable of learning and enables online access to information from the cloud. Ambient lighting with up to 30 colors provides illuminations on request. We Connect Services provide drivers with online traffic information in real time, online map updates, information about charging stations, web radio and much more.
With Car2X communication, Volkswagen is taking security to a new level. Data from compatible vehicles in the Volkswagen fleet and signals from the infrastructure within a radius of up to 800 meters can be implemented locally in fractions of a second and warn of danger spots, accident situations and stationary traffic. ID. Light in the cockpit supports the warnings visually.
With the ID.5 and ID.5 GTX, Volkswagen is entering a new market segment and accelerating its electric offensive in all vehicle classes as part of the ACCELERATE strategy. By 2030, at least 70 percent of Volkswagen sales in Europe should be purely electric cars, that is more than a million vehicles. In North America and China, the proportion of electric cars should be at least 50 percent. To achieve these goals, Volkswagen brings at least one new electric car onto the market every year. The CO2-Emissions per vehicle are reduced by up to 40 percent. On its “Way to ZERO”, the company wants to be carbon neutral on the balance sheet by 2050 at the latest.
The new ID.5 and the sporty top version ID.5 GTX with dual motor all-wheel drive are manufactured at the Volkswagen plant in Zwickau and are CO2-Neutral handed over to their customers. If they are charged with 100 percent green electricity, they are already almost climate-neutral today. With We Charge, Volkswagen offers the fastest growing ecosystem for convenient, networked and sustainable charging. It already has around 250.000 charging points across Europe. The E-SUV Coupé charges alternating current (AC) with up to 3 kW via the standard Mode 11 cable. At a fast charging station, the charging power can be up to 135 kW as standard.
