To discover a BMW 3.0 CSL E9 in motorsport look anywhere should be almost impossible. Although there is sometimes a vehicle to buy at various auctions, prices in the high seven-digit range should definitely be budgeted for. For example, in 2019 a 1974 IMSA BMW 3.5 CSL from Henry Schmitt's BMW Motorsport Collection to achieve over 2 million US dollars. Although the target value was not quite achieved and the vehicle was therefore not sold, the value alone shows what an original BMW 3.0 CSL E9 in motorsport look should cost. As an alternative to various auctions, the 3.0 CSL E9 in motorsport look may still be on display in a museum or at an event with historic racing cars. But sometimes there is one in traffic to see. The vehicle of Georg Schuster and his father. A beautiful replica that was featured in an elaborately produced and extremely worth seeing report by Sourkrauts is presented. The road legal BMW 3.0 CSL Group 5 widebody is unique.

Because of course the historic racing classic never made it on the public road. This fact alone makes the unique item even more special. And the creation of the vehicle was also very special. Just finding a suitable base was a challenge. If you are currently looking for an E9 from the early 70s, it is either not for sale or almost ready for scrap. For a restored bare body, 40.000 euros are currently being called on the Internet. And it is even more difficult to get BMW Motorsport parts. A replica that is true to the original is almost impossible. Because technical templates do not exist. But through various contacts it was still possible for the creators. For example, it was possible to borrow some original (!!!) parts directly from BMW and use them as a basis for creating the GRP components.

classic naturally aspirated engine tuning for 420 hp

And of course it was difficult to find an original engine from the 70s that was affordable. Georg Schuster therefore decided to install an S38 straight-six from the M5 E34 with a displacement of 3,8 liters. With classic Naturally aspirated engine tuning the engine was brought up to 420 hp and thus propulsion befitting its class is guaranteed. The correct designation should now be BMW 3.8 CSL, but the detail can be easily got over. Incidentally, the one-off got a considerably widened track, among other things with the help of rear axle swing arms of a BMW E3 and a specially made KW chassis. And the big cheeks are filled with beautiful 18-inch BBS rims and behind them sits a befitting Brembo brake system. And the paintwork is even better than the original. The characteristic stripes in the colors of the former Motorsport GmbH are namely lacquered and not only glued like the original. You can find much more information about the project in the video. Have fun watching!
