On December 16, 2020, Ford will be the first automobile manufacturer to unveil a virtual P1 racing vehicle as a true-to-scale model in a live stream. In collaboration with the gaming community, the German manufacturer has developed a virtual vehicle and now physically brought it to life. Real vehicles are usually transferred to computer games as graphic models. The P1 race car's journey began in March of this year when the gamer community was asked to vote on the car's package and features on Twitter, including seat configuration, engine position and cockpit design. Almost a quarter of a million fan votes were given during the entire voting phase. "What an impressive vehicle. I love every detail of the racing car. When we discussed various designs at the beginning of the year, the decisive factor for me was that it was unmistakably a Ford“Said Stuart Rowley, President Ford Europe. "The cooperative design process, in which the gaming community worked together with our highly ambitious design team, was particularly innovative".

Team Fordzilla P1: Innovative design

Team Fordzilla's innovative P1 racing car has an exterior designed by Arturo Ariño and an interior designed by Robert Engelmann, both of whom are Ford designers who work at the Ford Design Center in Dunton and Cologne. The racing car is built around a monocoque structure that is partially covered by a large, aerodynamic jet-fighter-style top that protects the driver and front passenger. The hyper-transparent top not only blurs the boundaries between outside and inside, but also emphasizes the Formula 1-like design of the racing car.

P1 with a slim GT-like front

The appearance of the P1 combines a slim GT-like front with impressive front fenders and extremely shaped body elements. The rear is completely exposed and celebrates the raw uncompromisingness of a racing car. LED instruments are located in the cockpit with which the driver and front passenger are kept informed of the route status. In addition, an integrated screen on the steering wheel enables live data exchange with the team in the pit lane. The entire interior is designed to help the racer minimize any kind of distraction during the race and maximize the enjoyment of the race. "Driving pleasure is at the core of our human-centered design. Is it great to sit and drive in this extraordinary automobile? Well, in the case of the P1 race car, the answer to that question is a resounding YESSaid Amko Leenarts, Design Director, Ford Europe.

From a CAD model to a real hypercar racing vehicle in just seven weeks

The Team Fordzilla P1 is the first Ford car to be built entirely digitally with no personal interaction during the entire process. Due to the current pandemic, it was designed by a team that had never met, partially worked from home, spread across five different countries, and put a stunning vehicle on its wheels in just seven weeks - that's less than half the time that is normally required for this. The finished structure is a full-size model with extreme proportions and a truly unmistakable character.

The hypercar, which was co-developed by the players, offers some special details that appeal specifically to the racing community. There is an AFK (Away From Keyboard) message on the floor in front of the front passenger seat, which playfully reminds you that the occupants of this seat are not at the keyboard. A #levelup graphic confirms that gamers and racers can improve every time they play or race, while a #liftoff graphic is a nod to the race car lifting out of the virtual world and transitioning into the real world. On the front of the car on the lower spoiler there is another important message in the form of a capital letter abbreviation: GLHF stands for "Good Luck Have Fun" and calls on players and racing drivers to have fun and to enjoy the ride to the full.
