GWM Tank 700 HI4-T PHEV: China's answer to the G-Class?

At the 2023 Auto Show in Guangzhou GWM Tank 700 from Great Wall Motor (GWM) attracted particularly great attention. An obvious rival to the Mercedes G-Class, the Tank 700 presented itself as a luxurious full-size SUV that impressed in terms of performance and fierce looks. With a length of 5,11 meters The Tank 700 even significantly outperforms the G-Class, which “only” measures 4,87 meters and cannot be described as “small”. Also the width of 2,06 meters and the height of 1,95 meters as well as the wheelbase of exactly 3 meters highlight it as an XXL SUV. And the massive dimensions make the Tank 700 an eye-catching vehicle even on American or Australian roads, where it was already announced in 2021.

GWM Tank 700 HI4-T PHEV

The heart of the Tank 700 is its drive: a 3,0-liter BiTurbo V6, supported by an electric motor. The combination results in a system performance of 525 PS and a torque of 750 NM. The key data make it GWM's strongest model to date. The force distribution is done by one Nine-speed automatic, as is common with other plug-in hybrids from GWM. And when it comes to off-road equipment, GWM appears to have serious ambitions to annoy the G-Class. The Tank 700 has a Reduction gear, he has Smart Air suspension and electronic dampers included. The 22-inchalloy wheels are covered with Michelin Pilot Sport tires and although GWM has not yet provided any information on towing capacity, payload, fording depth or off-road capability, these points will certainly also fit. By the way, the cabin is equipped with a lot of luxury. This includes a two-color Leather seats, a starry sky and orange stitching in the one shown in the pictures and video Premiere Limited Edition.

Less than half of the G-Class!

The first series of the new Tank 700 is supposedly only available 70 vehicles limited, which will be seen on Chinese streets from 2024. With a price of 700.000 yuan (around 90.000 euros), it is positioned well below the price Mercedes-AMG G63, which is only starting in Germany 187.247 EUR is available. It remains to be seen which other markets the Tank 700 will conquer. In summary, the GWM Tank 700 HI4-T PHEV is already a successful addition to the luxury SUV segment for us, which can compete with established models such as the G-Class in both size and performance. With the strong one Plug-in hybrid drive and the luxurious interior, it is an exciting alternative for SUV lovers.
