It looks like Hyundai is going to shed the pounds. Namely with the electric crossover Ioniq 5N. In a bold move, the manufacturer is planning to balance the weight significantly lighter rims to optimize. But how? Quite simply by putting heads together with two industry heavyweights – Dymag, the cycling specialist, and Hankuk carbon, the master of composites. Only recently was a prototype of a new 21 inch rim on the renowned Goodwood Festival of Speed presents. But this rim is no ordinary tire holder. With an innovative hybrid construction, the carbon fibers and a forged middle section connected together, it is a marvel of engineering.
Ioniq 5 N with carbon rims?
Thanks to the unique combination, the engineers were able to reduce the weight by an impressive amount compared to a standard aluminum rim of the same size 40 to 50 percent lower. But that's not all the futuristic rims have to offer. Not only are they amazingly light, but also stiffer, more durable and help with that rolling inertia to minimize. While the Ioniq 5 N will be the first model to benefit from the lighter wheels, it certainly won't be the only one. Hyundai plans to bring the technology to others as well Performance models to integrate the strongly expanding N-line. And Dymag has also been heavily involved in the research and development of the Hybrid carbon rims brought in. Other models already available vary in size from 18 to 23 inches, with more in the works soon 24 and 25 inch sets to bring to market.
Dymag and the secret of hybrid carbon rims
According to Dymag, the hybrid carbon rims have a clear advantage over full carbon wheels. The inclusion of a middle section made of magnesium or aluminum not only makes it easier design of different designs, but also reduces conversion costs. Furthermore, this carries Carbon fiber rim bed help to minimize noise, vibration and harshness and improve handling by reducing unsprung mass. But there is one hook. Although they make the vehicle considerably lighter, a Carbon hybrid rim definitely not up for an apple and an egg. So the question is, are riders willing to shell out a little more for the high-tech wheels? Only time will tell. Photo credit: Hyundai
