“Close-up” – the name of the Mercedes-Benz Museum series says it all. Each episode tells something surprising, exciting, enigmatic. To do this, she casts the spotlight on details of a vehicle, an exhibit or an element of architecture and design. This time in focus: the Mercedes-Benz 300 as a measuring car from 1960.

No. 3/2022: Mercedes-Benz 300 measuring car, 1960

  • The measuring car is connected by cable to a prototype driving in front of it
  • One-off in the Mercedes-Benz Museum based on the Mercedes-Benz 300 "Adenauer"
  • Mercedes-Benz Museum Close-up: Automobiles, Architecture and Exhibition Design – No. 3/2022

Unique: This Mercedes-Benz 300 in Legend Room 5 of the Mercedes-Benz Museum attracts attention in two ways – because of the long cable that connects it to a Mercedes-Benz 220 S (W 111). And because the car looks only half like a normal "Adenauer" (that's what the representation vehicle is called because of the preference of the first German Chancellor Konrad Adenauer for this type). The difference begins behind the B-pillar: there is an elegant, long rear end, generously glazed with panoramic windows, in the shape of a hatchback. Shapely rear lights and exhaust ends integrated into the bumper catch the eye. Then the surprise inside: there are numerous measuring devices and two individual seats whose narrow backrests are covered with mesh - like garden chairs.

Customized: The extremely individually built and equipped vehicle is consistently geared to its intended use. Because the one-off was created at Mercedes-Benz in 1960 as a test vehicle for the vehicle developers in the testing department. The noble Mercedes-Benz sedan of the W 189 series is chosen as the basis because a fast and large vehicle is required. After all, the measuring vehicle not only has to follow other vehicles effortlessly, it also has to be able to transport the voluminous measuring technology.
