Capturing spectacular moments: Porsche is expanding the Track Precision app
If desired, the PTPA combines recorded videos with photos and video clips on the smartphone

Every Porsche is at home on the circuit. However, since the majority of Porsche drivers use their vehicles on mountain passes, coastal roads or other idyllic routes, the Porsche Track Precision App (PTPA) no longer just focuses on closed strips of asphalt: the integrated Free Drive mode now enables particularly beautiful moments Record every ride to enjoy again and again. As already known from the established functionalities of the PTPA, the app documents the journey on request. It accesses control unit information in the vehicle via a WLAN connection with the Porsche Communication Management (PCM) and reads out, among other things, vehicle position, speed, engine speed, braking force, steering angle, longitudinal and lateral acceleration and other telemetry data relevant to driving.

Since the documentation of idyllic journeys is in the foreground in Free Drive mode, videos are only recorded in relation to the moment, unlike on the circuit: if the vehicle sensors register a special driving event, a one-minute video is saved - 30 seconds before and after the moment.

Free Drive mode automatically recognizes exceptional moments

Due to its close connection with the vehicle, the PTPA automatically recognizes such events. Dynamic driving maneuvers, characterized by high braking pressure, strong acceleration or higher G-forces, serve as a reference for a moment worth remembering. In addition, the driver has the opportunity to manually mark notable moments in order to capture them on video. If desired, the PTPA combines the recorded videos with media on the smartphone. For example, it integrates photos and video clips taken during a break from driving in order to document all facets of the trip. Since the Free Drive mode is not aimed at optimizing personal circuit performance, the far-reaching analysis capabilities of the PTPA are reserved for the racetrack.

Porsche brand ambassador and development driver Jörg Bergmeister

Brand ambassador and development driver Jörg Bergmeister tested what such documentation could look like. Born in Leverkusen, he brings back breathtaking photos and a clear conclusion from his trip to Berchtesgaden: “On the race track it’s all about lap times and direct competition. Here on the Rossfeld Panoramastraße I can enjoy the ride – without any pressure. With the new Free Drive function, spectacular moments are automatically captured. I can later call up the documented trips directly and easily in the app as a reminder.”

Information material for driving on the racetrack and off-road

With the Free Drive mode, the PTPA expands the scope of application to public roads and integrates the functionalities of the Offroad Precision app. Live information display while driving in Apple CarPlay has been enhanced for Free Drive mode. The PTPA also has additional information material in the form of texts and videos. Customers can call up briefings on racetracks, tips on braking points and explanations on driving dynamics. There are also tips for driving on unpaved terrain from the Offroad Precision app. The familiar PTPA functions, such as the analysis function for racetrack driving, remain unchanged. The app is available for Apple iOS (iOS 14 or higher) and Android operating systems (Android 8 or higher) and is now available in the Apple App Store or im Google Play Store available for free download.
