“This vehicle is the dream of my youth. I'm proud to be able to drive such a car today," says Walter Röhrl at the wheel of the icon. When the 911 Carrera RS 2.7 was presented at the Paris Motor Show on October 5, 1972, it was the culmination and at the same time the last model of the first 911 generation. Porsche presents the coupé to the public as the new 75 base vehicle for racing and rallying. “What distinguished you was not only the incredible successes in the rally, but also the versatility on the circuit. I see parallels between you and the vehicle,” sums up Timo Bernhard, taking the passenger seat next to the XNUMX-year-old. Time for a little exit.
"With its innovations, the 2.7 was regarded as a trailblazer for the entire automotive industry," explains Röhrl. It was the first production sports car to have a front and rear spoiler. The so-called ducktail ensures less air resistance and a top speed that is 4,5 km/h faster.
Walter Röhrl and Timo Bernhard continue their journey through time, enthusing about the RS legend and the influence of motorsport on the company's production vehicles. After a while, they switch to modern times: to a Porsche 911 GT3 RS 4.0 from 2011. The 500 hp sports car is a direct descendant of the 2.7 and at the same time a “wonderful car with perfectly implemented aerodynamic fine-tuning,” praises Röhrl and lets Timo Bernhard drive. "With the 4.0, Porsche has continued the myth and taken it to the extreme," summarizes the 41-year-old.
The race-ready Porsche with a displacement of four liters is the highlight and at the same time closes the 997 generation as the last one with a Mezger engine. Two more vehicles are still waiting for the two of them to complete their journey through time: the racing version 911 Carrera RSR 2.8, the forefather of all RSR models from 1973, and its successor, the RSR 3.0, with its increased displacement, the last and most powerful expansion stage of the RS Series. "Two cars that have clinched countless victories and helped establish the Porsche legend," says Röhrl, and he is involved in a small race on closed-off terrain with the native of the Saarland.
