The mountains are a favorite Destination. Whether along the stony slopes and gorges of the Grand Canyon or through the green forests of the Bavarian Alps - special motorcyclists prefer Mountains because of their varied and challenging routes. To ensure their own safety, motorcycle fans can take a few safety precautions. For example, the distance traveled plays a key role on longer trips. Robert Schön, Manager Germany and Austria at Peugeot Motocycles, knows: "How many kilometers motorcyclists can cover in the mountains depends on extreme mountain passes, the road surface, curves and the length of the breaks the riders take."
Things to know before you start
In order to be able to guarantee a successful and safe excursion into the mountains, the ADAC recommends not exceeding a daily driving distance of 200 kilometers, especially if there are many small side roads or unpaved paths on the way. A specifically defined number of kilometers helps to assess whether the destination can be reached before nightfall and whether the tank load is sufficient to reach the destination.
In many respects, mountains require a rethinking of normal road traffic. It is therefore advisable to observe the rules taught in driving schools when starting off on a hill. For example, motorcycle fans should look for a secure footing when starting off to avoid slipping on unpaved surfaces. When going downhill, it is advised to use engine braking to ensure the brakes do not overheat.
Possible risks while driving
Motorcyclists know it: The view while driving is often simply breathtaking. Nevertheless, you should keep your eyes on the road at all times. It's better to take a break from time to time, take off your helmet and enjoy the beautiful view. Unexpected curves or falling rocks could also pose a hazard. It should be noted here that the person driving uphill has priority. Another obstacle in the mountains can be a so-called willow rust. These metal grids built into the road prevent grazing cattle from running away, which can be more common in alpine areas. To safely cross the grid, riders should position the motorcycle at a slight angle.
