Windows up and air conditioning on: Now that spring is coming, when temperatures are rising, air conditioning is one of the main protagonists to make daily car journeys as comfortable as possible. What many do not know, however, is that air conditioning systems can also cause exactly the opposite. The pleasantly cool air in the car can make you ill. This not only applies to allergy sufferers because of the current pollen count, but also to generally healthy people. The danger lurks in the air conditioning system itself, which collects fine dust, bacteria, pollen or mold over time and is blown into the vehicle interior via the air conditioning system ventilation. And all this unnoticed, long before unpleasant rumors indicate that something is wrong. Coughing, sneezing, watery eyes or a runny nose can be the result.
Regular and complete: that's what matters
The renowned engineering association VDI also warns of pollutants in car interiors. In its Guideline 6032, it therefore recommends one regular and thorough professional cleaning of the entire air conditioning system, it should be every two years at the latest. Since almost every workshop now offers an air conditioning service, this is basically not a big deal.
But the problem is that air conditioning inspections in the workshop usually don't go far enough, the two biggest weak points of every air conditioning system are often not cleaned at the same time: The pollen filter box, i.e. the area around the cabin air filter, and the air conditioning system evaporator. The damp environment of the evaporator in particular offers the perfect breeding ground for pollutants of all kinds. Both can be cleaned inexpensively and with little additional effort as part of the air conditioning inspection.
