A little fuel knowledge for the ever more colorful fuel jungle

When you fill up your car, you usually have three or more types of fuel to choose from. The names of the fuels depend on the country in which you fill up. In Germany today almost only the designation is used Super . Normal and Lead free have now disappeared from the petrol pumps. All fuels today are unleaded. In 2021, the last leaded petrol was sold in Algeria. However, it cannot be ruled out that a moped with leaded petrol is still driving around somewhere among the Hottentots. However, betting on it would be risky and it is better to satisfy your need for wagering in the wagering game such as can be found in the Casino Bonus Finder.

Super and Super Plus

  • Today you can still see the names Super and Super Plus on the pump. These stand for the calorific value of the fuel. Super petrol has a RON, short for research octane number, which is 95%. This means that you can compress the fuel as much as you could with a comparison mixture of 95% isooctane and 5% n-heptane. With Super Plus, the RON is 98. Tony Sloterman, owner of Casino Bonusfinder, sums it up for us: ”The more the gasoline can be compressed before combustion, the better the efficiency. This means you can cover longer distances with less fuel."

E5 and E10

  • In countries with a lot of agriculture, ethanol from renewable raw materials has been used as a fuel for a long time. This also seemed to be a good idea to the legislator in Germany and it was decided to promote the whole thing with taxes and to add up to 10% ethanol to the fuel. Although this reduced the energy density, it made some journalists feel good. The fuel price remained high anyway.

LPG and LPG

  • If the petrol tank gives you too much range and if you like to fill up the car with gas with a little risk, there is LPG, short for liquefied petroleum gas. So it doesn't stand for agricultural production cooperative, as some might believe. Here, too, the energy density is lower than with petrol, and heating gas as petrol is only profitable because the state charges fewer taxes.

Diesel and AdBlue

  • Another fuel that has long had tax advantages is diesel. In fact, less mineral oil tax is charged for diesel. In addition, there is more energy in a liter of diesel than in a liter of premium petrol. This is why diesel is very popular with long-distance drivers and as a drive type in trucks. However, since diesel also produces more exhaust gas volume, the emission taxes are disadvantageous for the price development. And currently it is even more expensive than petrol. In addition, you have to use AdBlue to clean the exhaust gases of the diesel engine from nitrogen oxides. Diesel is becoming more and more expensive.

Peculiarities abroad

A lower octane rating is often given abroad than in Germany. This is because the MON, the octane number in the engine and not the theoretical octane number is given here. 95 RON is equivalent to 85 MON and 98 RON is equivalent to 88 MON. So don't worry if you can't find Super Plus petrol at the pump in the US.

Conclusion

  • Whether it is worth investing in the more expensive fuel depends on the engine. If you're driving an old moped, you don't need to fill up with premium fuel with an octane rating of +100. The engine just isn't efficient enough to get the most effective efficiency from the expensive fuel. You should also keep an eye on politics, because there are always new efforts at the ZK in Berlin that could turn the world of fuels upside down.
