Nokia develops tires made from 93% recycled or renewable materials!

Nokian Tires reaches another milestone on the road to becoming more environmentally friendly by introducing its most sustainable tire to date. The Nokian Tires Green Step concept tire is a masterpiece of sustainable innovation with an ambitious design where 93 percent of the materials are either recycled or renewable. This brings the company even closer to its goal: by 2030, 50 percent of all raw materials used for Nokian Tires tires should be recycled or renewable.

Nokian Tires Green Step

Nokian Tires has set itself an ambitious goal for 2021: by 2030, 50 percent of all raw materials used for tires should be recycled or renewable. The Nokian Tires Green Step concept tire is a testament to the ingenuity of Nokian Tires R&D department and their ambition to make driving more sustainable.

“Drivers are increasingly interested in the sustainability of their tires and expect tires that meet these standards. This also puts pressure on the industry to develop more environmentally friendly materials and to adapt tire manufacturing technology to these materials. With a concept tire like the Green Step we can push the boundaries of what is possible. This is a win for everyone, but above all for the environment”, says head of development Jouko Ilomaki by Nokian Tyres.

The rubber used in the Green Step concept tire is natural. In addition, renewable oils such as rapeseed oil are used. Almost all plasticizers, resins and processing aids come from renewable resources. In addition, natural rice hull ash serves as the main filler for the tread and sidewall, and renewable cord fibers are used to make the tire tougher.

“With each new development for the concept tire, we've learned new things. For example, one of the most challenging tasks was to completely replace the synthetic rubber with natural rubber, which we finally succeeded in doing.”, says Ilomäki.

The proportion of recycled materials will increase in the future

Almost every component of the Green Step contains recycled materials. For example, the carbon black used in the rubber compounds is derived from scrap tires and the butyl used for the inner surface, as well as the steel in the steel belts and bead wires in the structure are mostly recycled.

“We believe that the use of recycled rubber, and particularly recycled carbon black, will be a future trend in tire manufacturing: by 2030 we will have numerous new suppliers and more advanced technologies. The demand for raw materials with recycled or renewed components will also increase. We are very happy that we can already integrate so many recycled elements into the Green Step”, says Ilomäki.

Motorists around the world benefit

Nokian Tires Green Step is a winter tire and can be driven on snow and ice. Some of the materials used in this concept tire have already been used in previous Nokian Tires tire models. Natural rubber is an important material in all tires because of its beneficial properties. Alternative sources of natural rubber are also being explored, such as B. the guayule plant. Renewable oils are often used in Nokian Tyres' tires as Nokian Tires became the first tire manufacturer in the world to stop using highly aromatic oils in 2005.

“Although the development of Nokian Tires' Green Step only started about a year ago, it is the result of decades of innovation and accumulated experience in the field of sustainable tire design,” says Teemu Soini, Senior Manager, Materials Development at Nokian Tyres. “Many of the sustainable innovations contained in the Green Step are already being used in our tires and motorists have been able to benefit from them for years. During the development of the Green Step, innovations emerged that will be incorporated into the future tires that we offer to consumers around the world. We wanted to push the limits of our sustainable innovation capabilities and the result was the Green Step. It is proof of our ambition and our know-how.”

Concrete measures for a safer world

Since Nokian Tires invented the world's first winter tire in 1934, premium winter tires have been valued by generations of drivers who want a safe driving experience in all conditions. However, Nokian Tires not only focuses on the safety of motorists, but also works tirelessly to protect the world around us. This is reflected in all measures, from tire design to production: Since 2018, the company has had its ambitious, scientifically based targets for reducing CO₂ emissions assessed and recognized by the independent external Science Based Targets initiative. In addition, Nokian Tires has reduced the rolling resistance of its tires by an average of 2013 percent since 8,5, which saves fuel and reduces CO₂ emissions. The innovative spirit that went into the development of the Green Step tire will benefit generations to come. It is another step towards a safer world.
