Phoenix racing simulators - when motorsport meets sim racing!

A visit to Phoenix Racing, where two worlds of motorsport meet: the virtual and the real. The team from Rhineland-Palatinate is one of the top teams in the scene and actually has no reason to break new ground. She does it anyway. There is a lot to tell about the racing team. Ernst Moser founded the company in 1999. Since then, Phoenix Racing has had countless successes. Five wins in the 24-hour race at the Nürburgring alone, which is one of the largest motorsport events in the world, speak for themselves.

Ernst Moser is also the driving force behind the in-house Sim Racing project. With the same energy that he puts into his racing success, he tinkers with the development of racing simulators. At least that's the impression I got when I was allowed to look over the shoulder of the engineers and mechanics. This is the same crew that is responsible for the racing cars of the Meuspather team in real motorsport. And even drivers are involved. Mike Rockenfeller, for example. When the 2013 DTM champion sits in the racing simulator, it is not just used to prepare for his next race. No, it passes the knowledge on 1 to 1 to the technicians and thus helps to make steering wheels and pedals even more realistic.

virtual racing in focus

All very impressive, but the question still arises: why all the effort? Moser explained that the Corona crisis played a decisive role in this. On the one hand, the season planning was on hold due to the numerous event cancellations in the spring, on the other hand, virtual racing suddenly came into focus in one's own living room. If you think of a commercially available video console with controller, you are wrong. The Phoenix engineers explained the technology behind it to me in their workshop using a so-called "Sim Rig". The very fact that the seat moves with it and shakes me up is remarkable. You can feel every bump in the ground and every excursion with the virtual racing car through the meadow.

significantly more technology in the "Sim Rigs"

Compared to commercially available simulators, there is significantly more technology in the "Sim Rigs" from Phoenix Racing. A good example of this is the steering: it is an original steering column from the Audi R8. The steering wheel, which can be adjusted in all directions, is also an "original". CRD programs are used in the construction and high-quality materials such as carbon and aluminum are used. There is also electronic seat and pedal adjustment. There are different concepts so that the user can feel the movement in his seat. What I also felt: The spirit of optimism that reigns within the team. And that is precisely what is needed, because a lot is currently changing - this applies to the automotive industry and therefore also to motorsport.

Thomas Wachsmuth - He has been an integral part of tuningblog.eu since 2013. His passion for cars is so intense that he invests every available penny in them. While he dreams of a BMW E31 850CSI and a Hennessey 6x6 Ford F-150, he currently drives a rather inconspicuous BMW 540i (G31/LCI). His collection of books, magazines and brochures on the subject of car tuning has now reached such proportions that he himself has become a walking reference work for the tuning scene.  More about Thomas
