They are automotive diamonds. We are talking about rims that have never existed before and are an essential part of the Porsche 911 reimagined by Singer - Dynamics & Lightweighting Study - Turbo. They give the finishing touch to unique aesthetics. Created by the Californian luxury specialist Singer at the request of its customers, these wheels are implemented in Germany together with the experts from BBS Motorsport and Bernd Kussmaul. Some owners want their restoration to be track oriented, while others want the focus to be street use. Therefore, different designs were pursued. The study reinterprets two iconic wheels that are closely linked to the BBS motorsport tradition.

The sleek 7-spoke design allows the owner to pursue a road-ready aesthetic for their restored Porsche 911 Type 964. Achieving the execution demanded by Singer founder Rob Dickinson requires an obsessive passion for technical excellence. Bernd Kussmaul, Managing Director of the company of the same name, is known for his own passion for detail and love for the task.

Handwork made in Weinstadt

After milling and shot blasting, the wheels were delivered to Weinstadt. Now the hands and heads of the team around Bernd Kussmaul took over. The target was optically separated spokes in the middle, one part mirror polished, one part blasted so that it looks like dull gray. A very special look, like a soft, milky glow, was achieved by masking and polishing the glossy areas several times. "We have developed various solutions, discarded our own ideas and completely rethought them at short notice so that we can implement the design request with great attention to detail“, reflects Bernd Kussmaul. "The way to the result was top performance under time pressure. But we knew Rob trusts us completely."

Work of art made of technology, expertise and design

Also, the second set of wheels, known as “Turbofan” variants, allow an owner to take a track-focused approach to their restoration. It pays homage to the BBS wheels of the 934th and 934/5 endurance racing cars of 1970. Designed to draw heat away from the vehicle's brakes, the iconic wheels have represented precision, strength and beauty ever since. Rims are used as carriers, which were implemented with exactly the same effort as those in the 7-spoke design.

The milky effect is once again pleasing to the eye. The highlight was then screwed into the carrier, the disc, which creates multiple parts. This basic idea by Rob Dickinson then led Bernd Kussmaul to excellence. In order to achieve the desired effect, parts of the outer disk were polished to a high gloss, then anodized in the desired gold tone, some areas of it were masked again, the entire disk was painted piano black again and finally the gold areas were exposed again by hand with polishing wood.

740 hours of delicate craftsmanship

It all sounds very clear, quick and easy, but for both sets together it ended up being 740 hours of delicate manual work by an expert team of around ten employees at the Weinstadt site. "I always said the rims had to look like diamonds at the Goodwood Festival of Speed and Monterey Car Week. That's why I'm happy and grateful that I was able to give Bernd overall responsibility for the project at very short notice. If anyone does this reliably and with high quality down to the last detail, it's him. We share the same emotions, the same attention to detail. He implemented the rendering 1:1says Rob Dickinson Singer's Founder and Design Director. "These wheels are diamonds."

Trust at eye level

The first restorations, made possible by the results of the Dynamic & Lightweighting Study - Turbo, celebrated their successful dynamic debut at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in July 2023. The analysis and optimization in cooperation with BBS Motorsport will continue during the ongoing development process. Bernd Kussmaul also supplied other decorative parts for this restoration of the study: among other things, the steering wheel, the shift lever and round instruments, just what was contributed for the Dynamics & Lightweighting Study. Singer and Bernd Kussmaul have been working closely together since 2017. "Within a very short time, a very personal relationship with great trust developed. This has been shown and proven here again“, Bernd Kussmaul looks back. The topics for the next cooperation are already being discussed.
