Check blood sugar levels with the engine running? Attention forbidden!

Diabetics should also regularly check their levels while driving in the car. However, experts warn that with a running engine a fine is imminent! To check the glucose levels (blood sugar levels) in the car, the vehicle must first be at the side of the road parked and the engine abgestellt will. It is , just to check his values at the red traffic light with the engine running. Otherwise, according to the German Diabetes Society (DDG) a fine of at least 100 euros and a point in the Flensburg driving aptitude register. According to the DDG, even those who only briefly look at a continuously measuring glucose meter (rtCGM), such as a monitor on their belt, violate the German Road Traffic Act (StVO). The offense is assessed in a similar way to a smartphone call while driving. According to the DDG, the use of flash glucose monitoring (FGM or iscCGM) when driving also violates the Road Traffic Regulations. A scanner, for example using a smartphone app, must be moved over the firmly fixed glucose sensor on the upper arm or stomach to receive the current value.

Regular measurement is recommended

Low blood sugar is a great danger and should be recognized in good time, which is why diabetics, according to the express recommendation of the DSG even in the car regularly check their values. However, it should be clear that this is the case not with the engine running should happen. If a measuring device or an insulin pump is operated, this can become problematic and result in a fine. Being distracted by operating equipment increases the risk of an accident. It is therefore correct to park the car at the side of the road and switch off the engine.

However, there is one exception:

  • The exception applies when the meter not to take a quick look at the screen to read the glucose value or to operate it, as is the case with a mobile phone holder, for example. If the display only has to be switched on by pressing the button, that's fine, provided that it is there is no distraction. However, multiple taps or scrolling to the reading will discouraged, as this requires too much attention.

Lay down on the thigh? Please do not!

If the device is simply placed on the thigh, this can already be interpreted as "holding the device". According to the StVO, the regulation is as follows: Electronics for communication, information or organization are only permitted for operation when driving a car if they do not have to be picked up or held for this purpose. This regulation only applies if you have to look away from what is happening on the road for at most a brief moment when using it. The reason for the DDG statement was a specific incident that took place in Düsseldorf: A driver stopped his vehicle at a red traffic light and checked his glucose level. A traffic police officer observed this and imposed a fine. As already mentioned above, if hypotension is suspected or to check the values in between, the car should be parked or with the Hazard lights be driven to the curb. After the engine has been switched off, there is sufficient time and peace to start up the device.
