Autotuning is extremely popular. Everyone wants to get more out of their car. There are different types of tuning. However, caution is advised here. In most cases, changes to the vehicle must be reported. No matter whether Germany, Austria or Switzerland. Especially when components are attached and this changes the driving characteristics or even the performance of the engine. It is often the case when tuning the engine, either by chip tuning or by modifying the hardware (or both), a change in performance and emissions and fuel consumption. This change was not specified in the vehicle registration procedure by the manufacturer and is therefore not permitted without reconsideration.

in the approval is only the standard performance

Power box disabled: legal or illegal to use?

This could invalidate the vehicle's operating permit. This in turn means that you may be liable to prosecution if you drive an unregistered vehicle on public roads. Depending on the change in fuel consumption and exhaust gas values caused by chip tuning, the vehicle can even be classified in a different tax class. As a result, you may even be suspected of tax evasion if the increase in performance is not registered.

If the vehicle is modified and the performance values are changed, the insurance cover can also expire if this is not reported. If you are involved in an accident, the insurance company may refuse to pay. Therefore, before you carry out autotuning by chip tuning or other interventions, you should find out what the consequences are. Talk to the workshop that will do the chip tuning, what will be changed and how. Then go to a DEKRA or a TÜV branch and ask what that means for you and the registration of the vehicle and whether the change has to be registered and whether this is even possible. If you carry out the performance increase yourself (e.g. with a chip tuning box), make sure that the box is accompanied by a certificate.

Not to forget, the registration office and your insurance company may also have to be informed. Asking questions and briefly describing the facts ensures that you are on the safe side. Bottom line is that chip tuning is a simple and promising measure to get more performance out of your car. However, in addition to the technical aspect, one should not neglect the legal aspect, so as not to be surprised in the event that the operating permit has expired as a result of chip tuning and there is no insurance cover.
