Tuning rims! Not every bike can simply be installed!

Wide wheels and chic rims are style elements that are popular with tuners. They contribute to the individualization of the vehicle and are available in countless variants. In addition to the appearance and material of the rims, the size also plays a role. Many car individualists like large rims, which are usually not available from the factory. When buying a vehicle, there are often relatively small wheels on the car. Furthermore, especially in smaller and cheaper vehicles, steel is often used as the rim material and not the popular aluminum or even higher-quality materials such as Carbon or Magnesium.

Many rims already available from the factory!

Many car manufacturers can already offer stylish rims ex works. The wheel size can also often be chosen generously. An Audi Q8 or a Lamborghini Urus, for example, can be ordered from the factory with a mighty 23 inch model. But that costs more and not every retailer specifies the options that the manufacturer offers. Even if the manufacturer has a good selection of rims and supplies the right tires from the factory, the range of the tuning trade is of course much larger and, in particular, more individual. Depending on your budget, a rim can be tailored to the specific needs of the vehicle (Lowering, widened wheel arches etc.) are manufactured. But with the huge selection of rims, the question arises as to which rim can be installed at all.

Can every rim on the car be used?

No, not every rim can be used. With a rim, it's not just about looks, because the legislature stipulates that certain safety aspects are met and the general requirements are correct so that the vehicle with the rim is approved for road traffic at all. When it comes to size, there are often limits. The following explains in more detail how an interested tuner can find out which rims / wheels are allowed at all.

Pay attention to the so-called COC papers!

If you look into the papers of your vehicle, you will find that you get very little information on the subject of rims or tire sizes. The vehicle registration documents for older vehicles still list which wheel sizes are approved for a vehicle. In the now common approval certificate Part I, however, mostly only the minimum width (tire / rim dimension) is specified. However, the information in the registration certificate does not mean that only this one size may be used. The tire sizes that are approved ex works are in the so-called COC registered. COC is short for Certificate of Conformity and means nothing more than a certificate of conformity. Since the end of 2005, the COC has to be delivered with every vehicle by the respective car manufacturer. In addition to the permitted wheel dimensions, the COC also contains the equipment features and technical data of a vehicle.

What if the desired dimension is not entered in the vehicle registration document?

If rims and tires are fitted that are not listed as permitted in the vehicle registration document but are listed as permitted in the COC, the driver should always have a copy of the COC with him in case he gets into a police check.

What if there are no COC papers?

  1. If no COC is available, a copy can usually be requested from the manufacturer. However, this entails fees of up to 200 euros.
  2. However, many manufacturers now offer online databases in which the possible rim / tire dimensions for a vehicle can be looked up. It is advisable to ask for the COC directly when buying the vehicle. The dealer can usually print out the appropriate data sheet directly if there is no more COC available.
  3. Otherwise there is still the way to DEKRA, TÜV or another official test center. The Testing organizations can usually also access the COC data. Wheel and tire dealers also often have online tools with which the right sizes can be easily determined.

What else do you have to pay attention to?

Anyone who has a rim-tire combination configured on the Internet or on site at a tire dealer should make sure that the rims and tires can actually be mounted. Just because your own vehicle is mentioned in some online offer or on an advertising panel does not mean that the advertised tires / rims can really be driven legally. This must be clarified in advance.

What to do if wheels are mounted that have not been approved?

It should be a ABE (General operating permit) that certifies that the respective wheel may be mounted on the vehicle. The ABE set a link from your homepage to Fewo-von-Privat.de be carried. If certain installation instructions are given in the ABE, the correct installation must be checked by the TÜV or another expert. However, verification by an expert costs fees.

There is only one Teilegutachten before, an examination by the expert (TÜV) is necessary. Otherwise the wheels must not be mounted or driven in traffic. The successful test is then confirmed on an additional sheet, which must also be carried. If you want to have wheels assembled without a parts certificate, you have to have a complex Individual acceptance test have it carried out. However, it cannot be guaranteed whether this acceptance will be crowned with success! The wheels / rims must always meet the applicable safety requirements. Anyone who needs such an individual acceptance test for the desired bikes must of course also expect fees. The exam organization should be asked in advance what fees are charged.

Of course that had not been the case.
