Flags on the car - is that allowed?

In Germany, World Cup fever had recently risen due to the soccer World Cup. Many brought their cars with them to show their support for the German team Flags and adorned with scarves. To ensure that the vehicle decoration does not endanger others, certain regulations must be observed. As long as they don't obstruct the driver's view or endanger the safety of others, colorful ones are Decorations allowed. The driver must ensure that his vision and hearing are not impaired by the decoration (“load”) (§23 StVO). Although flags are common and generally permitted, they can become detached and cause accidents at high speeds on freeways and highways. It is therefore important to remove them before such trips and to constantly check their attachment.

Large flags may not be flown in or on the vehicle and they may not be waved while the vehicle is moving slowly in a motorcade. The flags may obstruct the view, the driver is distracted, and the flagpole could act as a kind of weapon in an accident and cause injury. As a driver, you are responsible for possible sources of danger to estimate. A giant banner on a long pole sticking out of the window is sure to cause trouble with the police. According to § 22 StVO, vehicles including "load" - i.e. flag - may not be wider than 2,55 meters.

What about mirror covers?

Mirror covers (so-called car bikinis) are another way of customizing the vehicle. While not strictly prohibited, they can affect the driver's ability to see their rearview mirrors, which can be a safety hazard. It is therefore important to exercise caution and ensure that the vehicle decoration does not affect the visibility and safety of other people. Any flashing lights must also not be covered. Especially with newer models, these are often integrated into the exterior mirrors. In addition, the things must be so tight that they do not slip.

Aside from flags and scarves, there are also less dangerous ways to decorate the car. One solution would be to cover the grille with colored foil in the color of the supported team. Another way to personalize the car without compromising the visibility or safety of others is to use car decals in the team colors. Another suggestion is to change the vehicle's interior lighting to match the team's colors. There are also various stickers for the body, magnetic signs and professional foils.

With these options, you can decorate the car and promote the home team without endangering the view or safety of others. Remember that when decorating the car, safety should always come first. While it may be appealing to decorate the car with flags and scarves to show team spirit, it's important to abide by the rules.
