Verstappen makes F1 history in Mexico!

Max Verstappen took his 14th victory of the 2022 season at the Mexican Grand Prix ahead of Mercedes rival Lewis Hamilton and his Red Bull teammate Sergio Perez after a thrilling battle at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez. New betting providers are on the rise! The Dutchman has thus set another career record as he now has the most wins in an F1 season, surpassing the 13 first places held by Michael Schumacher (2004) and Sebastian Vettel (2013).

Verstappen writes F1 history

Verstappen, whose Red Bull team opted for a soft tire strategy, finished 15 seconds ahead of Hamilton, who had to wonder why Mercedes swapped the medium tires for hard ones early in the race. Perez gave the home fans a reason to cheer in third place while Russell, who outperformed his team-mate at the start, was fourth by a wide margin. Russell was also dissatisfied with the strategy. He repeatedly asked Mercedes to switch to hard tyres, which the Silver Arrows failed to do in the final stages - but a stop on the Softis two laps before the end still brought the fastest lap.

Ferrari endured an unspectacular race, with Carlos Sainz and Charles Leclerc finishing lonely in fifth and sixth, ahead of McLaren's Daniel Ricciardo, who worked his way up to seventh on the soft tyres. He was able to hold this position despite a 10-second time penalty for a collision with Yuki Tsunoda. Esteban Ocon finished eighth after his teammate Fernando Alonso retired on the last lap. AlphaTauri driver Pierre Gasly received a five-second penalty for an overly aggressive maneuver against Aston Martin rival Lance Stroll and ultimately missed the championship point by half a second, while Alex Albon took 12th place for Williams. Nicholas Latifi finished last in his Williams, while the aforementioned Alonso was down with an engine problem and Tsunoda also retired after briefly being airborne in his collision with Ricciardo.

What happened?

In the run-up to the race on Sunday, there was a party atmosphere in front of a sold-out house. As in practice and qualifying, every lap of local hero Perez was celebrated. However, after technical problems throughout qualifying, 'Checo' had to settle for fourth place on the grid. He lined up behind his Red Bull teammate Verstappen, who started from pole position, and the Mercedes cars of Russell and Hamilton. Interestingly, Verstappen and Perez opted for soft tires to tackle the 800+ meters to the corner, while Russell and Hamilton opted for medium tyres.

At the end of the field, Haas driver Magnussen started from 19th place after being penalized by five places on the grid due to an engine change. Aston Martin's Stroll was P20 after being dropped three places after colliding with Alonso in the Austin. As the lights went out and the 71-lap race began, Verstappen got off to a good start and defended his position off the line into the corner before Hamilton caught up with Russell in the middle of the first chicane to take P2.
