The camping business is thriving! And not just since the COVID-19 pandemic. Even before that, camping trips were growing in popularity across Europe. The enthusiasm for holidays in a mobile home or caravan continues, and 2023 promises to be a successful season as well. According to the Caravaning Industry Association (CIVD), the German caravanning industry is once again recording sales growth compared to the previous year. And that despite increased energy and material costs, staff shortages and various delivery problems.
Trends in camping 2023
New registrations of recreational vehicles in Germany declined last year due to the circumstances mentioned above. However, after peaking in 2020 and 2021, the 2022 new registrations result was the third best ever. So far this year, compact vans and panel vans have been particularly in demand. The advantage of the vehicles lies in their suitability for everyday use. They can not only be used during vacation trips, but are also ideal for everyday use and sometimes even as tradesmen's vehicles.
And in caravans, too, there is a trend towards smaller and particularly light models. On the one hand they are more agile and easier to manoeuvre, on the other hand they can easily be parked in the garage in the off-season. And if the caravan only has a maximum permissible total weight of 750 kg, then even a category B driving license is sufficient for driving in a trailer. Furthermore, micro-caravans are also interesting for electric cars.
the focus is often on costs
A "mini camper" is usually referred to as a high-roof station wagon or SUV that has been converted for camping. Due to the comparatively low acquisition costs and their wide range of possible uses, they are currently enjoying great popularity, primarily among young camping enthusiasts. Incidentally, so-called camping boxes are even more practical than permanently installed camping equipment in the vehicle. The modular systems can be installed or removed in just a few simple steps and stored in the garage or basement when not in use. Examples are the Ququq camping box for the VW ID Buzz and the T7 Multivan or the Opel Zafira is3 “Free”. Photo credit: ThyssenKrupp Bilstein GmbH
