Unique piece: the 2023 Alfa Romeo Giulia SWB Zagato!

Here comes the Alfa Romeo Giulia SWB Zagato! This is a beautiful coupe based on the Giulia GTAm performance sedan. The SWB Zagato Coupe is stunning and comes with a set-up sure to excite car enthusiasts. Unfortunately, there is also bad news: The Giulia SWB Zagato (Short Wheel Base - short wheelbase) is unique and there will probably not be a small series. So it's not the sports car announced by Alfa CEO Jean-Philippe Imparato in July, which we might be presented with in the first half of 2023.

Zagato, the Milan coachbuilder, decided to create an all-new model to celebrate 100 years of collaboration with Alfa Romeo, which began in 1921 with the TIPO G1. However, the new model should also pay tribute to the current Giulia and the Stelvio, which are known for their dynamic driving quality. Especially, of course, when they are equipped with the 2,9-liter twin-turbo V6, whose performance in the Giulia GTA and GTAm with 540 PS & 600 Nm torque finds its climax. But thanks to the shortened wheelbase and the shorter carbon body, the Giulia SWB Zagato should be a lot lighter than the 1.580 kg Giulia GTAm, which will certainly improve performance even further.

The history of the Giulia SWB Zagato began in 2021. Zagato had the idea of packing the powerful unit into a coupé with a carbon body and a shortened wheelbase. And you can see that too, because the roof with the typical Zagato double-bubble shape is unpainted and shows the ultra-light carbon. A wealthy collector from Germany, whose garage also includes an 8C Competizione, a 1990 Alfa Romeo SZ and various recent Aston Martin Zagatos, in addition to the current Alfa cars, was quickly attracted to the project.

The SWB Zagato is unique - apart from being one of a kind - due to the combination of the GTAm engine and a manual gearbox. Because the vehicle is actually equipped with the manual 6-speed gearbox from the Giulia Quadrifoglio, which was only offered until the beginning of 2018. And the Giulia Quadrifoglio was also the basis for the SWB Zagato with all major components upgraded to GTAm levels. Zagato regards the design of the unique Giulia coupe as "natural evolution of the Alfa Romeo SZ models", from the Codatronca version from 1961 to the more recent SZ, whose front end is also the front of the current one Tonal inspired.

It was designed in collaboration with Alfa design chief Alejandro Mesonero and his team at Centro Stile Alfa Romeo, but Zagato emphasizes that conception, development and production was carried out entirely in-house. The low-slung front looks extremely aggressive in connection with the three-part headlights and can also be found on the Tonale and the recent Giulia and Stelvio facelifts.

the cabin is also special

Massive air intakes, a radiator grille with a fine mesh grille and painted Alfa logo and a hood with three air intakes complete the look. Incidentally, the entire front with the fenders is a single part that folds forward when opened. And the Kammback-style rear end SWB pulls straight down into a mighty Carbon-fiber rear diffuser. The lower part, including those arranged in the middle Sports exhaust system appears to have been taken directly from the Giulia GTAm. Although the interior looks like that of the Giulia Quadrifoglio at first glance, the seats from the Giulia GTA show up with a large "Z" in the headrests. In addition, the SWB only seems to be a pure two-seater, because a cross brace can be seen behind the front seats.

Unfortunately, there is no information about the technical data. For comparison: The Giulia GTA models go from 3,6 to 0 km/h in around 100 seconds and reach a top speed of 300 km/h. The price of the Alfa Romeo Giulia SWB Zagato was also not disclosed. The car will soon be handed over to the new owner.
