Student dreams on wheels: Mercedes-Benz 300D is Hot Wheels finalist!

A pretty special one Mercedes-Benz 300D from 1985 has arrived in the limelight: he is one of the chosen finalists of the renowned Hot Wheels Legends Tour 2023. But the best part of the story? About 260 students, led by their dedicated teacher, David Almanzan, brought the off-roader to life. For years, Almanzan, an automotive engineering teacher at Dekaney High School in Houston, Texas, has worked with the students on the project. And the starting point of the adventure? It was a forgotten 300D on a neighbor's property that hadn't been started in almost a decade. Luckily he is 3,0 liter turbo diesel five cylinder, known internally as OM617, famous for its robustness. Almanzan saw the opportunity to introduce his students to the world of automotive repair, maintenance and modification through hands-on work on the car.

Once in the school workshop, the 300D was used extensively modified. Among other things, they gave him a Lift Kit for extra ground clearance, off-road tires, LED light strips and fender flares lost. But the changes are not just limited to the exterior: the interior is now a racing seat for the driver and a far-reaching one rearview mirror, while the original Becker Grand Prix cassette player maintains a nostalgic note. And if you take a look under the hood, you will discover more adjustments: reinforcement bars for the engine, one oil catch tank , and a Semi-trailer-style exhaust system, which runs through the bonnet, are installed. However, whether these modifications affect performance remains a mystery.

"Tootsie" - A treasure on four wheels

Baptized in the name "Tootsie“, Almanzans 300D will compete in one of the two semi-final rounds in November 2023. But it won't be a cakewalk, because the competition is tough: Tootsie has to compete against other heavily modified one-offs, such as a 81er Camaro, the Colorado rock crawlers and 89 Volkswagen Rabbit prevail convertible. Should Tootsie win, however, then the treasure on four wheels will not only become an icon in the schoolyard, but will also join Hot Wheels' worldwide catalog of 1/64 scale cars. A dream that could come true! If we get more information about the changes, there is of course an update for this report. You will be informed about this if you simply use our Feed subscribe to. His collection of books, magazines and brochures on the subject of car tuning has now reached such proportions that he himself has become a walking reference work for the tuning scene.  More about Thomas
