App to the museum: Audi Tradition goes digital with new special exhibition “The Fifth Ring”

With the new special exhibition "The Fifth Ring", the Audi museum mobile in Ingolstadt provides a comprehensive overview of the history of the traditional NSU brand and, with numerous exhibits, commemorates the eventful history of Audi's "fifth ring". At the same time as the new special show, the new Audi Tradition app will also be launched on February 2nd. It is a virtual tour guide for visitors on site and, as a digital companion, also enables the museum experience on the go or at home. “The Fifth Ring” can be seen at the Audi museum mobile from February 2 to September 24, 2022; the 2G+ rule currently applies to visits there.

In 1932, the four companies Audi, DKW, Horch and Wanderer merged to form Auto Union AG – the four rings became their trademark. In March 1969, Auto Union GmbH, Ingolstadt, merged with NSU Motorenwerke AG, Neckarsulm. The new Audi NSU Auto Union AG based in Neckarsulm came into being with retrospective effect from January 1st. NSU is therefore the oldest predecessor brand in the company history of today's AUDI AG and is still inextricably linked to the Audi site in Neckarsulm: the three letters NSU stand for the city where the Neckar and Sulm flow together. NSU was founded in Riedlingen in 1873 as a "mechanical workshop for the manufacture of knitting machines". Audi Tradition is now dedicating the new special exhibition “The Fifth Ring” to the brand steeped in history. 11 automobiles, 23 motorcycles, a bicycle and a knitting machine can be seen in this one - and not only there ...

New Audi Tradition App: Launch for the special exhibition!

The new Audi Tradition app will also be launched at the same time as the exhibition. On the one hand, it serves as a digital companion in the Audi museum mobile: visitors receive in-depth content on the vehicles on display in text form, with audio guides for selected models and even with a 360-degree panorama view. What museum visitors are not allowed to do on site, they can experience on the screen of their smartphone: get into the vehicle and examine the interior. The Audi Tradition app also offers lots of exciting content from home or on the go. On top of the exhibits from “The Fifth Ring”, there will be additional multimedia content for the special show, such as a drone flight through the exhibition. The app also provides information about exhibits in the permanent exhibition of the Audi museum mobile and offers access to the Audi Tradition Shop for accessories, literature and spare parts for Audi youngtimers. The new Audi Tradition app can be downloaded from all common app stores for iOS and Android smartphones.

Stefan Tauf, Managing Director of Auto Union GmbH: “Even if the corona pandemic is making many things in social life impossible or only possible to a limited extent at the moment: We stuck to our start date for the exhibition and are thus offering culture and history a stage – especially in these times. I am particularly pleased that we now have a digital feature with our new Audi Tradition app: With the app, we not only make a visit to the museum even more interactive and multimedia, but also enable the digital experience of the exhibition on the go or simply conveniently on the couch at home. At the same time, of course, we hope that the app will arouse curiosity about a visit to the museum. Experiencing the exhibition on site with all your senses is and remains a special experience.”

2023: NSU's 150th anniversary with an exhibition in Neckarsulm!

NSU's path leads from the knitting machine to the bicycle and the motorcycle to the automobile. The history of this brand shows the development of mobility in Germany. The curator of the exhibition, Stefan Felber: “The NSU brand impressively shows how much mobility has changed over the past 150 years. Our special exhibition in Ingolstadt is also a prologue to the anniversary of the NSU brand next year – we will celebrate that in 2023 with a large exhibition in Neckarsulm.”

The current special show in Ingolstadt includes 11 automobiles, 23 motorcycles, a bicycle and a knitting machine. A highlight is the NSU Wankel Spider, the first automobile with a standard rotary piston engine. The two-seater convertible, drawn by the legendary Italian designer Giuseppe Bertone, caused a sensation at the 1963 IAA. Also on display is a Volkswagen K 70, the last model developed by NSU. The four-door sedan with three side windows and a harmonious design was formed by Claus Luthe, the chief designer at NSU at the time, who also gave the Ro 80 its groundbreaking shape. A Ro 80 from 1977 can also be seen in the special exhibition.

Other highlights of the special show: the fastest motorcycles of their time!

Among the numerous motorcycles on display, the exhibition features the motorcycle with the most displacement ever built by NSU: the two-cylinder engine from 1914 has 8 hp and was the most powerful, fastest and most expensive production motorcycle of its time. At that time, a worker had to work for almost two years for the purchase price of 1.575 marks, because they earned an average of just 900 marks a year. The fastest motorcycle of the 1950s can also be seen in the new special show: the NSU record machine Type Delphin III. In 1956 it reached a top speed of 339 km/h. In addition to the exhibits, large-format display walls and four multimedia stations provide further information.
