Fans of the Mercedes brand also consider the W124, the W126 and some even the W201 to be the best Mercedes of all time, but an extremely large number swear by the R129 SL, which was designed by Mercedes designer Bruno Sacco. And we also love the SL of the 90s. And the SL from back then had an unbelievable amount of ingenious technology, such as the integral seat, the completely electric convertible top with electrically adjustable wind deflector or the fold-out roll bar on board, which were pioneering and unique at the time. The comfort feature with the greatest eye-catcher is certainly the self-locking and locking hardtop.
V8 engine (M119) with 326 hp
Just a push of a button is enough and the 34 kg light aluminum roof seems to float over the body as if by magic, where it can then be removed by 2 people. Back then it was a revolution. And then there was the V8 (M119) with 326 hp and 5-liter displacement under the long hood. In combination with the smooth suspension tuning and the agile steering, cruising in the R129 was and is a real pleasure. But an SL500 can also show its teeth if it sprints from 0 to 100 km / h in just 6,5 seconds and continues to march up to 250 without any problems. The R129 as 500 SL was an absolute technological milestone that is still completely convincing today. Especially when you make a few subtle changes to Stuttgart.
Airride air suspension for lowering
This is exactly what the owner (Paul) did of this polar wise SL500 Keiron Berndt from Speed Hunters Magazine has visited. The vehicle is a copy from 1995 that has been brutally lowered using Airride air suspension (CAtuned W124 front struts + BILSTEIN B8 rear shock) with Air-Lift-Performance Management including two tanks and two compressors, which are built into the trunk so that they are clearly visible. And then there is the 18 x 8,5 inch fifteen52 Tarmac wheelset, which we are already working on Ford Focus ST have seen. It is painted in the vehicle color and fastened with red wheel bolts and, with its simple design, fits perfectly to the elegant body of the SL. In addition, Paul has replaced the factory-made orange turn signal lenses with those in JDM clear-glass optics and in principle it was the same with regard to the changes.
maybe an OEM AMG body kit will come soon
An OEM AMG body kit is planned to be installed shortly, but for now the body of the SL should initially remain in series condition. And also the various wear and tear from the previous owner (Paul's grandfather) are deliberately still preserved and should not be repaired. The SL should appear authentic and show that he lived and the rest of the life not as a highly polished Trailer Queen spend. We think the idea is good and are curious whether the SL500 will receive the AMG body kit mentioned. If we get the first information about this, there is of course an update for this report.
