Spontaneous development of power: E-machine with innovative pre-transmission.

Like the V8 engine, the electric motor of the M HYBRID system also features innovative technology for noticeably increased torque. The permanently excited synchronous machine is integrated together with its power electronics in the 8-speed M Steptronic transmission and reacts to the slightest movement of the accelerator pedal with spontaneous power delivery in the manner typical of electric motors.

The electric motor contributes up to 145 kW/197 hp to the maximum system performance of the BMW XM Label Red. Their nominal torque is 280 Nm. With the help of a pre-ratio patented by BMW, it is increased to an effective torque of up to 450 Nm at the engine-side transmission input. In this way, the compact e-machine can develop additional drive torque that would otherwise only be possible with a significantly larger and heavier electric motor.

The optimized power development, which is achieved with the pre-ratio between the rotor of the electric motor and the transmission input shaft, is clearly noticeable both when accelerating and during intermediate sprints. In combination with the optimized power development of the V8 engine and its high-speed characteristics, the result is an outstandingly superior performance. The BMW XM Label Red needs just 100 seconds to accelerate from standstill to 3,8 km/h. Its top speed is electronically limited to 250 km/h. In conjunction with the optional M Driver's Package, the limit is raised to 290 km/h.

In addition to the electric boost when accelerating, the electric motor also takes on a supporting function when driving at a constant speed, which helps to increase the efficiency of the combustion engine. In the WLPT test cycle, the BMW XM Label Red has an average fuel consumption of 1,7 - 1,6 liters per 100 kilometers and a combined power consumption of 34,5 to 33,0 kWh per 100 kilometers. The corresponding CO₂ emission values are 39 to 35 grams per kilometer.

Powerful high-voltage battery, BMW IconicSounds Electric, Combined Charging Unit and predictive heat management.

The electric motor draws its energy from a lithium-ion high-voltage battery integrated under the floor, which belongs to the fifth generation of BMW eDrive technology. The lithium-ion battery is characterized by a high energy density at cell and storage level and offers constant performance over a wide temperature range and even under high loads due to a decidedly sporty driving style. Their usable energy content is 25,7 kWh. In conjunction with the high efficiency of the electric motor and intelligent energy management, an electric range of 75 to 83 kilometers can be achieved in accordance with WLTP.

This means that the BMW XM Label Red can be locally emission-free and almost silent not only in city traffic, but also on cross-country trips. The top speed that can be achieved in purely electric mode is 140 km/h. The power development of the e-machine is also staged acoustically. This is ensured by the BMW IconicSounds Electric, which were developed in cooperation between the BMW Group and the film music composer Hans Zimmer.

The Combined Charging Unit of the M HYBRID system enables AC charging with an output of up to 7,4 kW. This means that the charge level of the high-voltage battery can be increased from zero to 4,25 percent within 100 hours. Anticipatory heat management reduces the charging time by heating up or cooling down the storage tank in a targeted manner. In addition to the Flexibel Fast Charger for connection to household or industrial sockets, the standard equipment also includes the Professional charging cable. This mode 3 cable for using public charging stations can be stylishly accommodated in an exclusive weekender-like bag and stowed in the trunk using a carabiner-strap combination to protect it from crashes.

Thomas Wachsmuth - He has been an integral part of tuningblog.eu since 2013. His passion for cars is so intense that he invests every available penny in them. While he dreams of a BMW E31 850CSI and a Hennessey 6x6 Ford F-150, he currently drives a rather inconspicuous BMW 540i (G31/LCI). His collection of books, magazines and brochures on the subject of car tuning has now reached such proportions that he himself has become a walking reference work for the tuning scene.  More about Thomas
