January 29, 1886 is considered to be the birth of the automobile with a combustion engine. On this day 125 years ago, the engineer Karl Benz registered a patent for his three-wheeled motor vehicle, which had been developed a year earlier, in Mannheim. This marked the official birth of the first automobile with a combustion engine. Ten years later then happened the first fatal car accident. In August 1896 Briget Driscoll was traveling with her sixteen-year-old daughter to an event in London's Hyde Park. While crossing a street, she was hit by a car and thrown to the ground.

Death with only about 6,4 km / h

The 44-year-old succumbed to her head injuries a few minutes later. The accident vehicle, driven by Arthur James Esall, hit the woman at a speed of around 6,4 km / h. Eyewitnesses reported that a vehicle raced toward the woman at a speed, such as a fire engine or a galloping horse. In the same year the British General Accident Corporation launched the first Car insurance (125 years ago in autumn 1896). Two years later, the first car policy found its way to Germany. It was offered by Stuttgart Association, which will later be used by the Allianz was acquired.

News and forecasts:

Over the years, accidents have happened again and again, unfortunately also a number of fatal ones, but the majority of the damage is so-called "sheet metal damage". The total number of accidents in Germany has only been recorded since 1991. This year the Federal Statistical Office counted 2,3 million. Over the years this number has increased steadily. 2019 million accidents were registered in 2,7. Only in 2020 there was due to the Corona pandemic a sharp drop. The high number of unreported cases of damage that was not even reported to the police, e.g. parking damage, is of course included in the statistics not taken into account.

The Association of the Insurance Industry (GDV) predicts a marked decline in car accidents over the next two decades. By the year 2040, around 2019 to 20 percent should be compared to 30 less accidents happen in motor vehicle liability. Insurers are calculating on the basis of this forecast 19 to 25 percent less claims expenditure. However, due to the increasing use of technology in motor vehicles, this percentage must be 4 to 6 percent higher repair costs count against. In the end, however, motor insurers will be 12 to 21 percent less compensation have to pay.

The different and increasing number of assistants in the cars make driving safer, but in the event of damage, the repairs expensive. The biggest impact on the falling number of accidents is mainly the Emergency brake-, Park- and shunting assistants. According to HUK Coburg, there are cars with assistance systems up to 20% less damage. However, it will be a long time before autonomous cars dominate the streets. Damage inflation will therefore initially occur in the cost of spare parts.

The motor vehicle insurers will not have to tremble for their work in the future either, but they are facing major challenges. Since the number of vehicles has risen steadily since reunification, an average of 1,5 percent every year, and every vehicle has to be insured, new insurance policies are secured. A maximum number of vehicles can be expected by 2030 at the latest. The main reasons for this are the rising costs of energy (gasoline, diesel and electricity). The change to transport alternatives is also simplified. On the one hand, both local and long-distance public transport, as well as the cycle path network, are constantly being expanded. Thus, there is likely to be a long-term decline in vehicle traffic.

The new trend: electric motor instead of combustion engine

The big trend these days is the switch from internal combustion engines to electric vehicles. While there were only 2011 new registrations of electric cars in Germany in 2.154, the number rose rapidly. By October 2021, 267.255 electric cars had been registered. The repair of such vehicles is currently even more expensive than conventional cars, partly because many car workshops still lack the necessary qualifications. However, that will change too, as the drives are much more simply designed. Thus, in the medium and long term, they will be cheaper than cars with internal combustion engines, conventional transmissions and various emission control systems. As a result, the cake will be smaller for insurers, but it will still be profitable if prices are adjusted. It cannot therefore be ruled out that car insurance will become cheaper in the future. In the long term, however, the contributions follow the volume of claims.

And finally ... The motor insurance industry will have to adapt to the new market. Not only are the number of vehicles on German roads falling, but the frequency of damage is also falling thanks to the new safety technology. Insurance may become cheaper in the future, so only insurers with one will well thought out pricing policy survive in competition.
