Avoiding traffic jams: rights & obligations of bikers in Austria!

One of the biggest advantages for motorcyclists in the city is the ability to bypass stationary cars (lane splitting, filtering) in order to be the first to go when the traffic light is green. In Austria, since 1998, motorcyclists and moped riders have generally been allowed to drive past stationary convoys of vehicles, but there are a few rules to be observed. In principle, motorcyclists, moped riders and cyclists are allowed to drive through a standing column. It is permitted to drive between the rows of vehicles and also across the vehicles.

Cars have to stop

In order for driving around to be permitted, the cars must actually be stationary. When the column starts moving again, cyclists have to find a gap to get back into line. Driving through between cars is also permitted as long as adequate side clearance is maintained. There is no precise definition of what is considered appropriate. Experienced drivers can therefore also use narrow paths between the cars.

Where to drive past!

When driving around, restricted lines must not be crossed. Cycle paths and multi-purpose lanes are also taboo. However, passing in the turning lane is permitted. This is permissible as long as you then properly rejoin the column. However, motorcyclists are not permitted to use the bus lane to pass by unless specifically permitted to do so. Many cities, such as Vienna, have already opened up some bus lanes for cyclists. Such bus lanes are marked by an additional sign.

adhere to the stop line

After passing the line of vehicles and reaching the traffic light, make sure to stop in front of the stop line. The stop line must not be crossed when the traffic light is red.

Prohibited: wheelies and noise pollution

Many motorcyclists like to show off their skills with acrobatic maneuvers. However, this should be avoided on the road. Wheelies can be considered improper use of a vehicle and are therefore prohibited. The same applies to noise pollution, such as the roaring of the engine in a tunnel. This is also improper use of the motorcycle and is therefore prohibited.

Choice of helmet and protective clothing

When it comes to equipment, the choice of helmet is a matter of personal taste. It is important that the helmet meets the safety requirements, recognizable by the test mark (ECE 22.05 or the newer ECE 22.06). A full-face helmet is good for optimal protection, although it may not look as fashionable. When it comes to clothing, safety should also be a priority. Although only a hard hat is required by law, flip flops and shorts are still not a good idea. Bikers should not take any risks and instead rely on protective clothing such as jackets, trousers and sturdy shoes. This means they are better protected from possible injuries in the event of an accident.

Of course, that was far from it. Our tuning magazine has countless other tuning reports in stock. And also with the topic Motorcycle and motorcycle tuning we meet regularly.
