Stabilizer bearing worn out? It is now important to note this!

Has a stabilizer bearing in the vehicle worn out? We know how to tell, how to change it and what it costs. But what is a stabilizer anyway? It is an important part of the chassis and is responsible for the vehicle's cornering does not tip over. The stabilizer acts as a twistable spring, also known as a torsion spring, and supports the body against lateral movements, i.e. tilting and rolling. This gives you more stability when driving. To a certain extent, anti-roll bar mounts are the “connectors” between the anti-roll bar and the body. They allow the stabilizer to turn can and she absorb shock and vibration, so that these are not transferred to the body. Especially if you own a slightly older vehicle, there is a risk that the stabilizer bearings will wear out over time knock out and no longer serve their purpose.

Recognize worn stabilizer bearings?

Do you hear strange noises while driving, sort of rumble? This could be a first sign of it. This is particularly audible when driving over cobblestones or through potholes. Is it dangerous to continue driving with a defective anti-roll bar bearing? If you notice such noises, you should visit a workshop as soon as possible. There it can be determined whether it is actually due to the stabilizer bearing, or whether it is perhaps one defective coupling rod, or something else entirely. In any case, the problem should contemporary be resolved. Otherwise driving safety may be severely impaired. The driving comfort is no longer or only partially given. Problems with the main inspection? That can be denied. As a rule, such a defect is called minor defect classified. So it has save negative effects during the main inspection.

The change and the repair!

It is important to know that stabilizer bearings are worn out not can be repaired. So you have to go through it new parts or by still intact used parts (in older vehicles) be replaced. Of course, it all depends on the vehicle model. The car must first on the hydraulic ramp. There the wheels are then attached to the affected axle dismantled. Then you do the same with that Underrun protection. Now they will bearing blocks and possibly the Coupling Rods solved. After this procedure comes the actual Change. Once this has happened, the disassembled parts must be reassembled in reverse order.

Which of course you also have to pay attention to, how the general condition of the stabilizer. Due to the constant turning movements, scoring often occurs. These can be clearly seen and they are further promoted by soiling. In order to ensure driving safety, it is therefore necessary to check whether the anti-roll bar still has the minimum dimensions in all places, or whether it also needs to be replaced. And there is also a vehicle where changing individual bearings is not possible at all. This includes the VW Touran 1T2. In this case you have to replace the complete anti-roll bar including the bearing.

What are the costs of changing!

Stabilizer bearing worn out? It is now important to note this!

Material costs for new anti-roll bar mounts as a set are between 20 and 80 Euro. Meyle, Febi Bilstein, Lemfoerder and FAG are well-known manufacturers of spare parts. A change should always be carried out axle by axle, i.e. on both sides of an axle. When changing bearings, it is also advisable to also replace the coupling rods, because these are also exposed to high loads. Here the costs per axis amount to approx 30 to 100 Euro. Depending on the design of the vehicle and each axle, the change takes about one to one and a half hours. Assuming an hourly rate of 100 euros, this results in costs between 100 and 150 Euro. There are also vehicle types where it is not so easy to get to the bearings, so changing them requires even more effort. Accordingly, one comes to the total cost of around 70 to 350 Euro, A Wheel alignment is only necessary in certain cases after installation / replacement.

Meaning of Stabilizer and Stabilizer Bearing

As already mentioned above, the anti-roll bar is part of the chassis. It supports the body against lateral movements, i.e. tilting and rolling. Not only bumps in the road, but also curves in particular can quickly cause the car to shake. The centrifugal forces that occur are responsible for this. If there were no stabilizer or other roll stabilization, the vehicle could tip over at any time. The stabilizer increases driving safety enormously and thus also driving comfort. In order to be able to fulfill its task all round, it is designed as a torsion spring or torsion bar spring. It supports the two wheel suspensions of an axle against each other. The bearings are the connecting pieces to the body. You are responsible for ensuring that the stabilizer can rotate and is securely fastened. Shocks and vibrations are also dampened. Because these should not be transferred to the body. Every vehicle has at least two anti-roll bar mounts on the anti-roll bar on the front axle. Depending on the axle construction of the vehicle, it can also happen that a stabilizer with two bearings is also installed on the rear axle.

The following note is essential: For safety reasons, tuningblog recommends all repair, inspection and maintenance work exclusively to be carried out in a specialist workshop! Although our information is summarized to the best of our knowledge and belief, we cannot assume any liability for the content. All information is therefore "without guarantee".

Of course, that wasn't the end of it!

In this tuningblog category there are guides and instructions for common defects/repairs on the vehicle and for installing accessories/tuning parts. Our articles explain in a simple way common defects and the corresponding repairs, as well as explaining how the first signs of a defect become noticeable. In most cases, we also have initial clues to the repair instructions in our repair instructions approximate The costs of the pending repair are listed. The goal of our subcategory “Auto Repair Guide“ is to create a head start in knowledge for the next visit to the workshop with initial tips. This may save you from tedious troubleshooting and small things can perhaps be done directly on your own. The same applies, of course, to the installation of accessories/tuning parts. Here, too, we would like to help with the implementation with instructions and tips. There are many other posts on this as well. Below is an excerpt of the last and HERE there are all previous instructions:
