What you have to consider when choosing a license plate!

First of all, the question should be clarified, what is a license plate on the motor vehicle for at all. The license plate allows a vehicle to be assigned to a single owner. But why is this important? In the event of misconduct on the road, a person responsible can be identified. For example, if you drive too fast and are flashed. So that the license plate does not look boring, many wish for one personalized license plate. Unfortunately, there are limits to the imagination here, because not everything is allowed or feasible. What is allowed and what is not, you will find out in the following text.

The license plate!

What you have to consider when choosing a license plate!

As a rule, license plates are randomly determined by the responsible registration authority. This is the same in every registration office from Aue to Flensburg. But since the customer is king, you can also express your wishes here. Most vehicle owners ask for special combinations of letters or sequences of numbers. Whereby it is mainly your own initials, birthdays, wedding date or similar. It is only important to ensure that the personal desired number plate has not yet been assigned to another person. This can often be checked directly online at the relevant registration office. However, the basic structure of the license plate is mandatory and must be complied with. It is important here that the first letters always identify the district in which the vehicle is registered and they cannot be changed. However, depending on the district, you can choose different abbreviations here. Approximately in Erzgebirge district For the Aue / Schwarzenberg region, there is the option of selecting "ASZ/SZB or AU" as an abbreviation. This is followed by letters and then numbers, the order must also be observed here. However, the letters and numbers are allowed be chosen as much as possible.

Basic structure of license plates

It is also prescribed how many Letters and how many numbers a number plate of a certain type of vehicle must contain. However, different rules apply to light motorcycles than to cars or trucks. An example from Berlin:

motorcycle and light motorcycles

  • 1 letter plus 3 digits, such as BA 123
  • 1 letter plus 4 digits, such as BB 1234
  • 2 letters plus 2 digits, such as B-AB 12
  • 2 letters plus 3 digits, such as B-AB 123

car and truck

  • 1 letter plus 4 digits, e.g. BA 1234
  • 2 letters plus 3 digits, e.g. B-AB 123
  • 2 letters plus 4 digits, e.g. B-AB 1234

Are all license plate combinations allowed?

Nein! Unfortunately, not all suggestions for a license plate can be implemented, because here too there are limits to what is permitted and what is not. According to FZV (Vehicle Registration Ordinance) § 8 Para. 1, license plates may neither express insults nor cause offense. However, there are differences at state and federal level as to what exactly is prohibited.

What you have to consider when choosing a license plate!

Some of the abbreviations prohibited in some federal states include the following:

  • HEI-L for salvation
  • HH for Heil Hitler
  • N-PD for National Socialist Party
  • SD for security service
  • SK-IN for skinheads

The following license plates are prohibited throughout Germany:

  • AH for Adolf Hitler
  • KZ for concentration camps
  • NS for National Socialism
  • SA for Sturmabteilung
  • SS for Schutzstaffel

You can find out what is prohibited in which federal state from the responsible registration authority, which can also provide further tips and information.

How much does my desired number plate cost?

First, the vehicle owner notifies the responsible registration office of the desired number plate. This now checks whether the desired number plate is still available or has already been taken and whether it meets the above requirements. This can be done via a database and, as already mentioned, depending on the approval, you can also do it yourself online. Once all the criteria have been met, nothing stands in the way of embossing. Up to this point everything is free. However, you have to pay the costs for the embossing yourself, which costs between 10 euros and 25 euros depending on the region. From time to time, cheaper offers can be found on the Internet. Furthermore, costs of 10,20 euros may be due if additional requests are added. However, this is a standard price throughout Germany.
