Into the 2020 racing season with new slicks

The 2020 season begins and thus starts again new, blatant details and of course new tires. As a rule, no real slicks will be used if driving is also to take place on the road. These are not suitable for everyday use.

What are slicks?

The term comes from racing. “Slick” means something like “smooth”, which indicates that these tires are treadless. Because they are completely smooth, they have very good grip on asphalt. Their rubber is significantly softer than normal tires. The exact mixture is a secret that is closely guarded by well-known manufacturers such as Pirelli. However, the special composition also ensures that these tires wear out very quickly and need to be changed often.

Slicks are generally not street legal. This is simply because they cannot offer the necessary safety that is required in road traffic. They work very well on dry asphalt, but as soon as wetness comes into play, aquaplaning occurs in no time and the tires no longer offer a grip. In the worst case, the driver can stray from the road and endanger others. That is why slicks are taboo in everyday life.

Semi slicks for everyday life

For the reasons mentioned, which make slicks unsuitable for everyday use, many drivers choose semi slicks. Not only racing drivers, every sporty driver enjoys the low-profiled tires, which are also very popular with tuners. They are the perfect mixture of a first-class racing feeling when driving and the necessary safety that is required on our roads. A particularly popular model is the Pirelli sports tire P Zero Race. It can be found online, for example, in the tiresale tire shop.

The Pirelli sports tire P Zero Race

The P Zero Race has some innovations to offer. For example, it has a special profile that has been created asymmetrically and consists of longitudinal and transverse grooves. The longitudinal grooves are created in the inner area of the tire. They are used to avoid losing your grip on a wet road in an emergency. The water from the asphalt is absorbed by these grooves and then quickly directed away from the tire. This significantly reduces the risk of aquaplaning. Nevertheless, it is the case that these tires are not expressly suitable for wet roads, but can best show their strengths on dry asphalt. The profiling offers as much safety as is necessary for street approval.

Furthermore, every driver will benevolently notice that the P Zero Race responds extremely quickly and precisely to the driver's instructions. This gives the decisive small lead in a race that can decide whether to win or lose. For this purpose, the outer area of travel has been designed in such a way that it creates particularly good stability thanks to its grooves. This is particularly noticeable in curves that always involve particularly high loads.

Despite the racing properties, the rubber of this tire is mixed in such a way that it does not wear out too quickly and must be replaced immediately. Special care was taken to ensure that the properties during wear are suitable for everyday use and that wear is low. Depending on the use and driving behavior, you can enjoy the tire for a long time, even if you drive it often, as if it were new.

Like other semi-slicks, this tire is street legal. Anyone who drives it will be rewarded with a dynamic driving experience that is second to none. What you should be aware of, however, is the weather: as soon as you are on the road with these tires and it is raining, the speed should be reduced so that the risk of an accident due to loss of road grip can be avoided.

And what about the rims? Preparation at Tire Sale

The tires alone are not enough, because only the rims make the car complete. The provider Tire Sale has a special offer for this, because old or defective rims can be powder-coated here. There is even a five-year quality guarantee on this treatment. But how does it work?

First of all, the old paint is removed from the tire. This happens in a chemical immersion bath that does not attack the material and does not cause any cracks or other damage. Then the rims are roughened, with a sandblaster or glass bead blaster. This is followed by the actual coating, which is applied with a spray gun. The paint particles are charged during application, either by an electrode or by friction. This will cause them to stick to the rim. Three coating steps are carried out, each of which is completed with heat. The layer solidifies by burning.

Rims coated in this way not only make a very good visual impression, they are also very easy to care for, as they can be cleaned very well with a mild cleaner. However, you should not use polishes that contain abrasives. These could attack the top layer of lacquer. Otherwise, this layer of paint is elastic and yet impact and scratch resistant, making it ideal for a challenging driving style.
