Odometer manipulation: it is particularly common in these countries!

Most drivers change their vehicle every three to five years. This means that a car purchase is made twice a decade or even more. However, the risk of being scammed in the process is with everyone Car buying ubiquitous. Recently the car history platform carVertical tries to find out how the extent of odometer manipulation varies between countries. The company conducted a study based on almost 900.000 logbook queries from 2021. The results show how widespread odometer manipulation still is. But some results might surprise you!

most common in Central and Eastern Europe

The data shows that manipulation of the mileage in Latvia is most widespread. at more than 24 percent of Latvian vehicles checked on carVertical had their mileage manipulated. The startling figure suggests that one in four Latvian used car buyers will end up with a car that has been tampered with by criminals. Second place goes to Romania. Every fifth used car, respectively almost 20 percent of cars in Romania checked on carVertical had mileage issues. Things are not looking good in the other Baltic states either: Estonia has the third-largest share of manipulated used cars, Lithuania is in fourth place in the statistics. Russia and Ukraine are also among the countries with the highest rates of odometer manipulation.

On the other hand, the situation looks better in some Central and Southern European countries. But even in “cleaner” markets there are still large numbers of manipulated vehicles. Every tenth Used cars in the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Slovenia, Croatia and Serbia checked on carVertical have reversed mileage. In Poland and Hungary, the proportion of manipulated vehicles is now at 12 and 14 percent respectively.

Collateral damage to the European economy!

The head of the communications department of carVertical, Matas Buzelis, notes that transparency problems in Europe cost billions of euros every year. If you buy cheap, you think you're getting a bargain. But when the car has a dubious history, a lot of money often has to be spent on after-the-fact repairs. "Germany, France, Belgium, the Netherlands and Italy are the most important countries of origin for used cars for the Eastern European markets. Cross-border car transactions are particularly risky because these vehicles are often offered with manipulated mileage. The so-called Car clocking is considered an invisible crime in professional circles. According to scientific studies, it causes economic damage of more than 9 billion euros per year in Europe alone", explains Buzelis.

The problem is that car thieves often cannot be prosecuted efficiently by the authorities. The reason for this is the complicated legislation, which describes the punishment for such an act in more detail. While some Western European countries are known to impose hefty fines or even imprisonment for odometer fraud, in weaker markets, with vehicles that are on average older, there are insufficient resources to efficiently enforce criminal prosecutions.

Cars with incorrect mileage are harder to sell!

2021 was a difficult year for the automotive industry due to the continuing semiconductor crisis. No one wanted to give up their leased car because there were no vehicles to replace it with. And used car buyers continue to have a hard time because there is a noticeable shortage of immaculate vehicles on the used car market.

According to carVertical, the year 2022 will present us with the same problems. Buzelis points out how important it is to have the vehicle history checked when buying a used car. "It's true that with all the disruptions to supply chains over the last few years, few flawless vehicles have come onto the market. But that's no reason to just buy into it. A review of the vehicle history reveals many of the known and common scams. So also odometer manipulations."

Vehicles with mileage fraud are not only more vulnerable and expensive to maintain, they are also difficult to sell. According to the automotive expert, buyers often pay up to 25 percent more for cars with odometer manipulation. And with increasing transparency on the market, it is becoming increasingly difficult to sell such a car again.

Of course, that wasn't the end of it.
