The police have always been very committed to preventing the misuse of smartphones in traffic. But now there is a new approach how this can be achieved much more effectively. Because video controls will in future be carried out throughout Lower Saxony. The State Police President Axel Brockman already commented on this by expressing his belief in traffic monitoring technology and would consequently like to use it in the whole of Lower Saxony as soon as possible. Up to then, HD camera technology was only used by the Oldenburg police to transfer drivers typing from trucks and vans. It is still uncertain when this technology will be used nationwide.
As Bernd Althusmann from the CDU also noted, the abuse of a smartphone at the wheel is not just a game with your own life, but also that of other people. The mistaken belief that things have always gone well up to now can be fatal.
What additional measures are taken!
Posters and banners (with pictograms of a bicycle, smartphone, stretcher), which arise from the new edition of the “Typing kills” campaign, are explicitly aimed at all road users and are intended to draw attention to the danger posed by mobile phones in traffic in Lower Saxony. Dramatically illustrated, the banners are also being displayed in towns and villages for the first time. In 2018, more than 30.000 cell phone sinners were caught in Lower Saxony. So far it has not been recorded how many accidents were caused by smartphones behind the wheel. However, this should change from 2021. Section 23 of the Highway Code lists the distraction violations. These should then be included in the Federal Office's statistics on the causes of accidents.
