Tried: Saphe Drive Mini traffic alarm / radar detector

[Display]

After we got the ooono® traffic alarm - radar detector & traffic jam alarm have tested, and apart from that, over and over again deactivating App, were not dissatisfied with it, Saphe's counterpart came fluttering into the house. Specifically the Saphe MC, Saphe One + and the new showpiece, the Saphe Drive Mini with small Display. We specifically dealt with the Saphe Drive Mini. But what is actually behind the devices? What can the "traffic alarm" actually do? First and foremost, he warns across Europe Speed cameras, accidents and other hazards. And with a price from € 39,95 (MC) to € 69,95 (Mini), it is cheaper than many a ticket. In our short practical test, we tried out Saphe.

Saphe Drive Mini Traffic Alert

Like the Ooono traffic alert (which, by the way, still does not have a working app on the Huawei P30, so that is useless, and has even been completely exchanged once), the data set used is based on the information from Blitzer.de for Germany, for the Netherlands and Belgium it is speedmaster and for Spain you work with Social drive together. And the Saphe Drive Mini we also have it in the vehicle (see video below) assembled. The bracket supplied is provided with double-sided adhesive tape for attachment and there is also a magnetic bracket as an alternative.

Tip: If you help yourself with a piece of Velcro, you are even flexible and can use the Saphe Drive Mini in multiple vehicles use.

Info in advance: its use is strictly prohibited

The use of such a traffic alert is one legal gray area. The Saphe devices warn, however not only from speed cameras, but also from other dangers such as breakdowns, traffic jams, etc. If you deactivate the radar warning function in the app, the device can completely legal be used. If you don't do that, and if you get caught, you have to reckon with a € 75 fine and one point in Flensburg. The activated speed camera function can only be verified via the app on the smartphone. And the StVO paragraph 23 is only aimed at the vehicle driver, but not at the passenger. He may use the speed camera app / radar detector.

Update: The legal situation for the passenger has changed. There is more information about this HERE

The pure installation of a warning app is not punishablebut only that Use. An installed warning app may be saved on the smartphone, however not be operational. Operational means that the speed camera app or the radar detector activated and thus switched on are. That to ...

no operation necessary while driving

A big plus point is that you can keep your fingers off your smartphone and the Saphe device while driving. Once installed and the app set up (our video shows you how to do this) the smartphone automatically connects to the traffic alarm and what with one beep and blinking is acknowledged. The Saphe device then automatically detects when the vehicle starts moving, and is armed. Android users in particular just need to ensure that the app also in the background is allowed to run. With iOS and Android, it must also be permitted that the app can always access the location. If there are still problems with the connection, an will sound after a few seconds Alarm and Display displays a message. Once you have arrived at your destination by vehicle, you have to nothing to do. The connection will be automatic separated and the Saphe devices go into stand-by mode.

The small dimensions of only 5,95 x 3,6 x 1,5 cm (Saphe Drive Mini) allow countless positions for mounting in the vehicle. In addition, the built-in rechargeable Lithium Ion Battery fully charged in a short time and for several weeks applicable. The Battery condition is also shown in the display. And the device has two separate buttons (red / blue) to report speed cameras or hazards. A quick press is enough and the information is sent to Saphe / Blitzer.de & Co. via the app. And in order to carry out such a message, the app must be on the smartphone not to be open.

  • "Normal" event such as traffic jam, accident, breakdown, etc. - once briefly the red Press the button (hold down the red button in case of a breakdown)
  • mobile speed camera - blueness Briefly press the button once (for a fixed speed camera, press the blue button for 3 seconds)

Warnings are shown on the display

When an event occurs, a loud warning tone sounds (can be set via the app) and the display shows the corresponding message. The tones can be used for warnings or for speed cameras acoustically and also in terms of the volume can be set differently. And the reliability also works in our test. However, the messages depend on many factors and in particular on the users. The Blitzer.de database is huge in terms of star boxes, mobile speed cameras can only appear as a warning if another user has already discovered the speed camera 8 or the danger zone) and reported to Blitzer.de Has. A built-in radar function is of course not there.

You also have to live with the fact that if you drive over a bridge, for example, and one or more users have a speed camera on the street under the bridge reported that the Saphe traffic alarm starts and issues a warning. The device reports everything that was reported by users in the direction of travel. But we don't think that's bad. Better you have than you would have! And we had maybe 1.000-1 false alarms during the test over a distance of around 2 km so far. Our video shows you exactly how the traffic alarm works:

And finally ... Is the Saphe Drive Mini traffic alarm recommended? Yes! Knapp 70 € do not mean a free ticket, but a possibility to secure to be on the go. The Blitzer.de community is almost always up to date and you don't have to worry about anything, except to charge the battery every now and then. Assembly and functions are extremely simple and self-explanatory and a distraction while driving remains complete from .
