E-bike tuning in the USA: a new scene is developing!

A new movement is gaining prominence in the United States: the modification of electric two-wheelers, including illegal racing. In addition to conventional e-bikes, members also modify e-scooters and e-motorcycles. This is followed by drag races or huge joint rides. The bikes are often designed to be eye-catching and much faster than usual. Hundreds of tuned-up e-bikes, e-pedelecs, e-scooters and e-motorcycles ride through the streets together on joint trips. Although e-bike tuning is also illegal in the USA, some participants in the tuning scene could take electric mobility in the two-wheeler field to a whole new level. They develop completely new vehicles that are not yet available anywhere.

E-bike tuning in the USA

The E-bike tuning scene in the USA is a growing and diverse movement that is not limited to conventional e-bikes, but also modifies e-scooters and e-motorcycles. The tuners are mostly enthusiastic electric pioneers who want to make their vehicles faster, more powerful and more individual. But they also accept illegal races and conflicts with the law, because the tuning of e-bikes is also prohibited in most cases in the USA. However, the scene is also characterized by strong cohesion and a high level of creativity, which could lead to new developments in the field of electromobility. The trends are primarily eye-catching designs, high speeds and innovative technologies.

In Germany, approval is required for structural changes to the e-bike. Without this approval, the two-wheeler may no longer be driven on public roads.

The scene stands for cohesion within the community!

If you browse forums or watch various videos on YouTube & Co, it quickly becomes clear that the scene has little to do with crime. Rather, one finds friendly members, community and cohesion. The videos in particular show that if someone falls while driving together, others are immediately ready to help. Some would like to see such a scene in Europe as well. And in the USA, there seems to be greater acceptance of electromobility, especially among motorcyclists. While EV drivers in the US continue to be insulted by drivers with internal combustion engines, this new scene seems more open. More precisely, riders of conventional bikes and motorcycles find the electric variants interesting in most cases.

A video shows the e-bike tuning scene!

In the YouTube video embedded below this paragraph, the channel "Sur Ronster“ into the scene and shows footage of races and meetings. He asks the viewers: Are the tuners actually criminals or are they acting as pioneers to advance electromobility? The race at the beginning of the video reminds us a lot of the car tuning scene: two drivers compete against each other. The faster one wins and advances one round. The whole thing takes place in a tunnel, because the races are with the modified bikes illegal. Although there is a lot of illicit activity going on in the scene, the members come from different age groups. While the majority are adolescents or young adults, older people are also involved. Even children actively participate, like a little girl riding past the YouTuber on the rear wheel of her tuned e-bike. Photo credit: Sur Ronster

Which changes are particularly popular?

A real term for the new e-bike culture (apart from e-hackers, e-racers, e-tuners) seems to exist or not. The following changes are particularly popular when tuning e-bikes or e-pedelecs:

  1. Increase in speed: Modifications to the motor and control unit can increase or circumvent the speed limits.
  2. Battery Performance Improvement: By installing more powerful batteries, the range and running time of the e-bike or e-pedelec can be increased.
  3. Suspension Adjustment: Tuners can upgrade the suspension to provide better traction and ride comfort, especially when driving off-road.
  4. Changing the brakes: An improvement in braking performance through the use of high quality braking components or hydraulic brakes.
  5. Customization of the design: Adjustments to the frame, color and graphics to make the e-bike or e-pedelec more visually appealing and unique.
  6. Lighting modification: Adjusting or adding LED lighting elements to make the e-bike or e-pedelec more visible and eye-catching at night.
  7. Adjusting the tires: Use of tires with special treads or materials to improve traction and handling.
  8. Replacement of drive components: Installation of high-quality chains, sprockets and cassettes to increase the efficiency and lifespan of the drive system.
  9. Optimizing the sitting position: Adjustment of handlebars, saddle and stem to improve riding comfort and ergonomics.
  10. Adding accessories: Mounting of luggage racks, mudguards, stands or other practical additional components for more functionality and comfort.
