Preventing fuel theft: This is what commercial vehicle operators should know

Increasing fuel prices have led to a huge increase in diesel theft over the past 12 months. Estimates put the losses for companies at several million euros. Many fleet operators face the challenge of having to protect their vehicles from costly damage - damage that insurance companies often fail to compensate for. According to the Federal Association of Road Haulage, Logistics and Disposal (BGL), cases of fuel theft are difficult to prove due to a lack of evidence, which is why insurance companies do not pay for them.

Not only trucks were affected in the past 12 months - road rollers and emergency generators were also targeted by the thieves. As the BGL explains, companies incur thousands of euros in repair costs every year as a result of diesel theft and the resulting damaged tanks. In addition, operators have to pay for rental vehicles while their own damaged trucks are repaired.

The thieves are rarely caught and the police often have no way of stopping these criminals. In fact, most fuel theft investigations result in neither arrests nor compensation for vehicle owners. However, if the perpetrators are caught and found guilty, they face severe penalties: heavy fines and up to five years in prison. In more serious cases, e.g. B. Breaking into buildings to steal fuel is punishable by up to 10 years' imprisonment.

However, fuel theft is difficult to prove.

John Osmant is Managing Director of Brigade Elektronik GmbH, a market-leading provider of safety products and solutions for commercial vehicles and construction machinery. He says: “We see that criminal activities such as fuel theft result in enormous costs and a lot of trouble for vehicle operators. The problem has worsened over the past 12 months - the perpetrators feel emboldened by how quickly they can steal fuel from vehicle tanks and they are not afraid of the consequences. This is partly because there is a lack of evidence to capture and ultimately bring them to justice.”

"We've worked with a number of fleet operators, installing dashcams and CCTV systems in their vehicles to help prevent these crimes. Dash cams and cameras are connected to Brigade's Mobile Digital Recorders (MDR) which record activity around the vehicle. These images are of great value in incidents such as fuel theft. Not only does such a system act as a deterrent to thieves not even targeting a vehicle, it also provides valuable, irrefutable evidence when a crime occurs."

“Also, alerts can be set up via our fully managed 4G service – for example, when a person approaches the vehicle. The system allows operators to remotely access their vehicles and related activities without having to be physically present in the vehicle.” “This system provides protection and security for drivers and operators – especially when vehicles are parked overnight. And should a crime take place, they can hand over the video images to the police for further investigation.”
