Even for classic vehicles that are only registered in small numbers, the suspension manufacturer KW automotive develops coilovers with part certificates. This is now available in the compression and rebound stages as well as in the Lowering adjustable KW V3 classic chassis also for those manufactured from 1985 to 1991 BMW threesome All-wheel drive sedan. As part of the parts certificate, the BMW 325i X (E30/16) can be continuously lowered between 30 and 50 millimeters on both driven axles. The KW V3 classic suspension is offered for the BMW 325i X from €2.400. More at www.kwsuspensions.de

In addition to electric cars, classic automobiles are also growth drivers in the automotive accessories market and the tuning industry. According to the KBA (German Federal Motor Transport Authority), at the end of 2021 almost 20 percent of the vehicle population in Germany was between 15 and 29 years old, while 2,3 percent were older than 30 years. So it is also obvious that many drivers who are looking for original spare parts for their youngtimers and vintage cars also like to use components on the independent aftermarket. This can also be felt at the KW specialist retail partners and the chassis manufacturer itself. "More and more classic car lovers who want a modern chassis for their older vehicles are contacting us," says KW classic car expert and brand manager Sascha Daucher.

KW V3 classic suspension with modern damper technology for BMW 325i X (E30/ 16)

The BMW built from 1985 to 1991 has long been a rare classic car 325 X. The two-door and four-door all-wheel drive sedan was the first civilian BMW to have two driven axles ex works. KW has further developed its KW V30 classic coilover suspension, which is known for the BMW E3, and the suspension, which can be adjusted separately in compression and rebound, is now also available for all BMW E30 with all-wheel drive. "Our classic applications for the old three-series BMW, with manually adjustable damping characteristics, are in great demand," says Sascha Daucher from the chassis manufacturer's fire management team. One reason for this is, among other things, that the structure of tires has developed dramatically over the past few decades, that the state of the art in chassis technology that existed in the XNUMXs no longer harmonized with modern tires.

What used to be considered an optional wide tire is now smaller than an original equipment tire. With the KW V3 classic suspension, even the damper tuning can be individually adjusted to modern tire characteristics and much more. This is made possible by the separately adjustable KW multi-valve technology in the KW suspension. "We also use the V3 valve technology, which can be adjusted in compression and rebound, in our special OE coilovers such as the BMW M Performance suspension components," Sascha Daucher continues.

The rebound stage, which can be adjusted with 16 clicks, allows the handling and driving comfort of the chassis to be individually adjusted. By increasing the tensile force in the damper, body movements on the body are reduced. The E30 stays on course and drivers have more driving stability at high cornering speeds. Regardless of this, the compression level can be adjusted with twelve clicks in order to increase the traction of the tires and further influence the handling.

additional preconfigured high-speed valves

With the KW V3 valve technology, preconfigured high-speed valves are also used in the compression and rebound valves. If, for example, the BMW 325i X is driven over large transverse gaps or rough stretches of road, the high-speed valves react and open additional channels for the hydraulic fluid in the damper. “To put it simply, this chassis technology means that the tires no longer lose traction when driving over bumps or bad asphalt. In all respects, the E30 325i X makes driving easier and more neutral in everyday life and even at high speeds on the motorway. With our chassis, the E30 drives almost like a modern BMW without losing its character,” says Sascha Daucher, describing the handling.

For the BMW E30 with rear-wheel drive, which is still available in large numbers, KW forges the steering knuckles on the front axle strut and can offer the chassis as a complete solution. "With the E30/16, the all-wheel drive models, on the other hand, we need the original steel-galvanized front axle struts for the chassis modernization in order to convert the old standard chassis into a modern KW chassis." As part of the parts certificate, the KW V3 classic chassis enables a stepless lowering of 30 on both axles up to 50 millimeters.
